  • Sounds delicious

  • I can’t really comment on its value as an adhesive. IME these things tend to work in certain circumstances but I’d loathe to use them as the sole method of fixing something, especially not something load bearing.

  • My carpenter is planning to fit the MDF skirting boards with expanding foam. What are the merits of this approach?

  • Few, I would have thought, but maybe it'll work beautifully?! Expanding foam isn't a specialist adhesive is it, I thought a glue type of thing would be more usual. Also they'd have to be held in place from the front along their entire length while it dries to stop them pushing out at all sorts of angles, and then leaky excess trimmed off when it's dry?

I am not a skirting board fitter.

  • They use a low expansion foam for and apply it with a gun. Reading up on it it seems to be the choice of pros rather than glue.

Just wondering if anyone has any direct experience.

  • I'm tackling the alcove shelving in the next few weeks any eyeing up various finishes.

Would it be better to go for a laminated plywood than using regular plywood and painting the tops? I'd like the bonded finish on the edges but white on top. If that makes no sense I apologise.

I'm leaning towards the laminated stuff but is it easy enough to work with and cut without chipping the laminate?

  • Best way/tool to remove carpet grippers without fucking the floorboards underneath (or at least, not fucking them any more than they already might be for having had carpet grippers nailed into them)?

  • I've always found a bigger flat head screwdriver should do the job just fine. Go under right near the nails that are securing it to the floor and you should end up breaking many and it'll lift the nails straight out.

  • I help if need making something if required? I have large capacity bandsaw, etc...

  • Could be better for stopping errant drafts I guess

  • There was a discussion a few pages back in cutting laminated chipboard with chipping the laminate. Conclusion was it's very difficult without power tools and specialist blades. I would imagine ply to be the same.

  • Interesting! You're Manchester way right? Or have I got accounts and ti bikes mixed up...

  • Yes, met a you a couple of times at Keep Pedaling at what Shona affectionately called 'Tramp Camp'..

  • Ah I thought that may be the case!

I would assume that regular (non laminated) is far easier to cut and finish.

So in that case I'd want to seal it and paint the top of the shelves?

  • I'd like to build a workbench for my garage. Relative noob to anything made from wood that has to be more than just basically functional, are there any good plans around?

  • If you've got $10k worth of specialist woodwork equipment in a dedicated workshop there are tons of great youtube videos that will show you how with just $100 of wood.

  • I've saved this seller and always thought their designs were sensible and achievable:

You should be able to work it out from the pics. But this was the one that shows the design the clearest I think.

  • I spent a week or so laminating PAR 2x4s to make my dream worktop, only for the whole thing to fucking twist on me. Then I over corrected with a plane and made the whole thing worse. Plan is in the spring to fix up the No.7 jointing plane I picked up off ebay then try to properly flatten the top (currently drops off considerably at one corner so a lot needs to come off the rest to make up for it).

    Or start from scratch.

  • Been asked about a present for me. How much does a router cost?

One of the ones that allows you to do lots of stuff rather than just an edge router.

  • What about making a mould and then filling it with epoxy?

  • Ah yes, that looks achievable. Ta!

  • Don't forget to like and subscribe, and if you'd ring the bell, I'd really appreciate it.

  • The question is, how long do you think it'll take to sand it flat if theres a lot of drop off?

  • I was sold on them as a seller when I saw they had a shot of a car on their bench.

TBH I doubt it means much, but appreciate the pitch.
