SRAM 1x brifter no longer shifts

Posted on
  • Right hand brifter no longer shifts, no cable engagement and a small piece of red plastic fell put when I opened it. Can’t seem to internal mechanics online, and they’re 2nd hand so not sure sram can help?

  • It’s force hydro

  • Any help would be appreciated

  • Welcome to SRAM

  • There was a thread recently when someone totally stripped a broken shifter to repair it.

  • Probably borked - Sram don't do many spare parts for the shifter mechanism. That red bit looks broken (as you say). That's the bit that holds the gear cable in place

    should look like this

That notched bit (02) should rotate when you move the paddle full in, and there should be a flappy bit (03) that catches and hold the gear in place. When you move the paddle half in (downshift) that flappy bit should lift and drop down one notch. Which part of that doesn't happen any more?

  • When you push shifter, number 2, red bit moves round, cable and casing isn’t visible and the whole things remains shifted round. No other mechanism works. Does that make sense?

    Before shift and after shift

  • See 03 in the diagram. That should stop the ratchet in every gear, but it appears missing.

  • it appears missing.

I’m not sure. It looks like it might be folded in, tucked under the ratchet wheel somehow. The spring that keeps it under tension has ridden up a bit, leading me to believe it’s not just a chunk that snapped off, but rather that metal part has shifted out of alignment.

@JoeC Can you see the part Nekature’s talking about inside the shifter, horizontal under the ratchet wheel?

  • SRAM shifters are very easy to take apart, clean, replace worn parts, and rebuild. I did it to my wife's bike this summer while on holiday in France, in a campsite, on a picnic table, with only basic tools, after watching a couple of YouTube vids.

If the red plastic cable holder thing is broken you may be able to buy a spare online.

  • Did you get this sorted? I have the same issue but not sure if it is the same thing causing it, was going to try and take it apart this weekend.

Fortunately, since they destroy themselves on a pretty regular basis due to poor conception

  • haha maybe I should just get some different shifters but that's going to be an expensive change

  • yeah, makes sense. but still looks like the red bit has broken. Kind of looks like it's rotating too far

try putting a cable in there, pulling on it so it has some tension then spraying the whole thing with lots of WD40 and pulling on the cable while downshifting.

  • With kids, work etc, time is sparse so I took it to cyclefit and got them to send it away to sram. Apparently they turn around in a week.. we’ll see.

  • I’ve only had the group 6 months brand new, off forum member. I’ll make sure I’m stocked up on spares (can’t find the red bit online though) so I can fix in future.

I used to have Red on my road bike and loved it. Force 1x has been disappointing. Wish I’d gone GRX

  • No I can't see the red bit in their spares or on ebay etc. But also the 03 part mentioned earlier seems to be missing too and also doesn't seem to be listed.

Once I've opened mine up I'll see if its comparable.

  • That’s what I will need to do. Where did you source parts, specifically parts annotated in diagram above?

That's a good guide on getting it apart. I don't think you can buy spares for the shift mechanisim though. not that you need to if you've sent it back anyhow

  • Thanks - more for future reference, if they give up every 6 months, I’d rather do it myself

  • Well fixed the issue with mine not shifting, the end of the cable had just somehow managed to come out of the little red bit of plastic holding it in place, so that was an easy fix. However it isn't shifting still because the rear mech isn't being moved by the cable but that's another issue.

While I had the bar tape I thought off I'd remove the shifting mech from the left hand brifter since it's not in use. Seems like you can't remove it with exactly the same method as @fredtc posted above because there is a bit of plastic with a sprung allen bolt inside getting in the way of pushing the axle from that side. The bolt is attached to something on the other side labelled "brake in" with a rotating sign next to it. Is that to adjust lever length?

Anyway a sprung washer sprung off in my kitchen and now seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth and after lots of swearing and searching I have given up in a huff.

  • A good technique for finding stuff like that is to buy a replacement. The original should turn up soon after.

  • News from SRAM. Don’t have the parts in and won’t for a ‘few months’ - wonderful news.

  • I have sheared the shifting paddle off not one but TWO SRAM apex RH shifters. literally, sheared clean off mid-shift (and mid-ride) TWICE. the second time I was stuck in a pretty high gear with lots of rollers between me and home (15 miles away). lovely stuff

    you're not alone
