I think the only implementations which were audiophile grade were fantastically expensive and didn't sound any better than a good conventional tone arm.
When I was a boy, the perennial vapour-ware was a non-contact vinyl reader which was going to use laser interferometry to provide a perfect analogue reproduction of the groove. Then the iPod was invented and both record companies and listeners stopped caring about quality because quantity was cheaper.
