There's a video somewhere of a Japanese guy demonstrating one he developed not too long ago.

There's a german guy trying to develop a system cutting disks with a laser. I guess he could cut negatives to press with but his long term aim was to cut them individually. I think he mentioned a ceramic material for the disk.
I think the only implementations which were audiophile grade were fantastically expensive and didn't sound any better than a good conventional tone arm.
When I was a boy, the perennial vapour-ware was a non-contact vinyl reader which was going to use laser interferometry to provide a perfect analogue reproduction of the groove. Then the iPod was invented and both record companies and listeners stopped caring about quality because quantity was cheaper.
