If it all fits together with the correct clearances and press fits, and if making it do so doesn't involve cutting away material that's holding the frame together, then it will work. There are some big ifs in there, and you're likely still putting far more time and effort into the task than the butchered frame will justify at the end of the process.

Does anyone else find Laura Kampf videos intimidating yet somehow relaxing?
I wish I took welding back in high school...

Hold on, this is a niche cycling forum where weird bike stuff, and especially artisan or unique stuff is often singled out for praise...?! Also... 'nonsense/poser' describes a certain amount of the current projects thread, in a good way!

..yea, rather the minimalist / functional niche though, hence the name.
"Unique" is cool and all, but heavy as fuck expensive as fuck "cool" half-motorcycles bikes with pointless show-y accessoires can stay on hipsters instagram accounts for all I care.

This sounds like a flap in French aristocrat's trousers for quick-draw shenanigans with his mistress.

I don't know, I think that idea is pretty adaptable. She puts a substantial toolbox in there and of course a child/pet could work too.
As far as the bikes go I think they look great though I wish they were purely electrical powered; a small city motorbike alternative. -

I'm starting to think about getting a van/mpv to replace my Toyota Verso. Something like the obligatory Transporter I guess, that can seat 4 + dog + shitload of stuff. Also petrol.

Transporter
Fine if you have the money, but check out the Caddy/Berlingo/Kangoo etc., especially in the LWB versions they give up little to a train spotter and are cheaper to buy and run.
-
• #105940
What sort of age and budget?
Petrol options for anything Transporter sized are rare unless buying very new or very old.

They seem like not quite as much of a space upgrade from my verso (possibly caddy maxi, though. Will investigate further). Basically I need something that can house kids in back, dog in boot (in cage) plus still potentially have room for a fuck off great tent and 2 adults + 2 kids levels of camping crap. But also I only want the one car so it needs to be vaguely practical. I guess most people go Transporter as they’re one of the least hideous of this sort of thing?
@grams it needs to be fairly reliable and comfortable. Maybe around 5 years old max? Still in hypothetical stages, but budget somewhere around 10-15k max

intimidating yet somehow relaxing
It's a funny one. I might not feel quite as peeved as TK, but she is very "youtube". She is definitely skilled, knowledgeable and capable - but I find her videos a bit annoying. But I could say that of many of the maker youtube channels.
I think this is going to be quite hard to explain why I find her annoying, and I'm keen to try and not sound like I'm criticising her personally. I also think a lot of my complaints come from my own weird expectations of people/stuff. But essentially there's always an element of cackhandedness that winds me up when I watch her videos - whether its a duff bit of welding, or a contraption that clearly doesn't work, every time I watch one of her videos there's always something that puts me off in some way.
But she's just doing what she's doing. Making stuff and putting it into youtube and she's clearly popular, and good at making videos that people like - none of which deserve criticism per se. And if your goal is to just make content of you making stuff, it probably doesn't matter how good the stuff you make is.
Take this cupholder video. It's fun, it's silly and I should find it entertaining. If my mate turned up with a bike with a cupholder she'd welded into it I'd be buzzing/find it hilarious. But for some reason it kinda winds me up to watch it. This post is already too long for no good reason, but I kinda want to figure it out for my own sanity.

On the flip side, watching this geezer put furniture together is about as captivating as it gets for me:

Typing this out I've kinda realised that I dislike most makers on youtube as I'm simply a grumpy prick.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Ha, excellent!
I see what you mean (and @tinakino too) and kind of agree, but I'm a sucker for people who seem competent. -

Apparently they're more "car like" than some of the alternatives, but I haven't driven one to know.
How often are you going camping? It might make more sense to stick with a small car and hire a big MPV only when you need it.
-
• #105945
Camping probably represents the maximum amount of crap it would need to carry and only a few times a year. But on a more day to day basis, there’s bikes, scooters etc to carry, and doggo takes up most of my boot at the moment.

Also, those gripes are very very minor when put beside the majority of makers on youtube. Compared to the horrible snarky holier than thou engineer types or the ones that have to do everything at 1000% intensity, Laura seems intensely palatable.
Also, your avatar made me lol. Eureka for lyf brew! I'll get one, one day.

I’m a fickle guy, all my avatars have reflected my current grinders.

Ishitani uses Phillips screws, definitely oldish school.
-
• #105949
They may well be JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) rather than Phillips, which is a different cross head screw type :)
-
• #105950
Ah well then, I hope they're a better standard in that case.
i know what youre saying but in regards to tube joins,
i have a couple of framesets that have the top tube welded from the top of the head tube, with a external headset fitted with no issues
if the inside diameter of the head tube matches the outside diameter of the cup, why would it not work ?
