my wife and I can sit in the same room
I would really advise against that unless you have no choice. Us working in a one bed flat with no doors had a pretty bad effect on my mental health as other half is constantly on calls and LOUD. It also stopped me from working effectively (I couldn't concentrate) and I really felt that my career was starting to suffer.
I don't think any headphones can really fix the problem unless your wife is very softly spoken.
We kinda solved the problem by moving him into the bedroom (only room with a door) but he's still too loud sometimes, so we have solved the problem by buying a five bedroom house (well, a four bed with a bathroom that needs demolishing) which is probably overkill but means we'll get a study each.
I'm going for a long worktop, divided by a drawer unit so that my wife and I can sit in the same room (WHAT THE FUCK COULD GO WRONG WHEN I WORK WITH NUMBERS AND SHE DOES WORDS AND STRATEGY AND PHONECALLS). New sockets chased in. And maybe an Ivar unit or two on the other wall for additional storage. While building out the wardrobe area for the kids.
Dream is projector on ivar, apple tv to projector to white wall. So kids can sit/play on days we're not mad busy.
