WTD: 10s Campagnolo Shifters

Posted on
  • The imminent arrival of a tandem and a bunch of research has lead me to believe one can control an 8 speed Shimano drivetrain with 10s Campag shifters. To find out, I’ll need:

Campagnolo 10 speed levers, new style shape, silver, ideally ultrashift.

    Anyone got owt?

  • Mmm?

  • I may do. Will have to have a rummage in the parts bin. Likely to be a little ratty but should still be functional. I'll DM you if anything comes up

  • Ah nice, thanks. Ratty is cool. Would be good to find out if it even works really.

  • Centaur were the only Ultrashift ones that came in silver, but they're rarer than hen's teeth. The other issue is the clicks are quite soft: they work okay on a full Campag setup, but might not be ideal on a mixed setup.

  • Thanks, that's good to know. I have the also-rare black Veloce ultrashift 10s on the winter bike.

Will a left powershift (droopy or 90º thumb lever) work ok with a triple?

  • Not much of an idea on the Powershift, I would guess not though?
Yeh, the Veloce shifters (make sure they're the later ones with the black cable spool as these had the clickier mechanism) are generally more readily available....there's a set on ebay right now, for £250......you can usually get them for fifty quid or so though.

  • Picking up a pair of broken silver lever shifters later, could make a hybrid set.

  • What's broken on them? They're pretty solid internally, unlike the model before that used g springs. If they have the soft clicks, you can buy an upgraded lever body for about sixty quid I think, these come with the stronger clicks and you just need to transfer the bar clamp/hood/brake lever on to them (and maybe the finger shifter if you want to retain the silver look)

  • They're PS, not sure what's broken on them. Was thinking of getting a new US shifter body and repairing them. Cycleclinic does them for £55 which seems like a good way to go.

My black Veloce are on a 1x bike so I could swap that lever to get a working ratcheting shifter for the triple too.

  • Sounds like a decent idea. You should be able to strip the mechanism from the left powershift lever for your 1x bike. The hoods are likely transferable as well, providing you extend the slot for the thumb lever.

  • Unless you've got all the other drivetrain parts, consider a Jtek Shiftmate, as that should get you ten gears with a 10 speed Shimano cassette.

  • Shimergo and triple, now that's interesting.

Aren't all 10s Campagnolo levers compatible with a triple? At least when triples were still a thing.

  • The tandem has an 8s Shimano drivetrain. New wheels and mech would be $$$ so I'm thinking of ways to get rid of the awful Shimano shifters with washing line cables sticking out the sides.

Being a Campagnolo user I was happy to discover 10s shifters work with 8s Shimano. Indexing etc should be more tolerant on 8s so happy to keep that. Probably easier just buying new PS silver lever shifters but I'm not sure the triple would work that well, and PS is apparently guff. I don't know from experience though, having always sought out US.

  • That's the impression I get. My left unused shifter has 7 or 8 clicks, should be fine to cover the range of a triple.

  • Interested to hear how you get on.
By co-incidence my spares box has 8 speed Shimano and 10 speed Campagnolo, never thought of mixing them.

  • I’ve been running this on my touring bike for a number of years. 10 speed centaur ergoshift levers with a 9 speed era xt rear mech, and 8 speed shimano cassette. It runs faultlessly, with just two spare clicks at the top.

  • The plot thickens - it’s actually an 8 speed Campag cassette....
