That canti hanger looks great actually might have to hunt one down. Sjs actually had a carbon 26er when I was looking but the reversed cantis and the idea of it on the steel hopper put me off, I’m sure if you find the right frame it could look something special.

Did some eBaying today, have some nice condition stx rc cantis on the way
Was quite a challenge to find but a 73x110 un55 bottom bracket.
And finally some new tools, a couple cone wrenches so I can tackle the crunchy hubs hopefully some elbow grease and then some actual grease should do the trick. Finally a cassette removal tool to get the mangled cassette off!

Just polished the stx cranks up they’re looking nice and shiny but I’m a bit worried about the teeth they look pretty worn down might have to get a new crankset as these have the bloody granny ring attached to the middle.

Would love to go 1x but the cash dosent stretch to getting a new deralliur and bigger casette at the minute, thats definitely the plan for the future. Might have a lookaround for a cheapie tripple for the time being!
EDIT: I mean now you mention it i could definitely go 1x7 hmmm I am tempted.
EDIT 2: Just checked it is a 94 bcd crankset, now im thinking if 1x7 would be worth it if I went with the nice 14-32 cassette I found on the bay that should give me a nice range, defenitely easier than my 48x18 tracklocross gearing im on atm.

If you're not planning on heavy climbs and really fast flats at the same time 1x7 can do wonders. I've used 1x7 on a couple of my builds and it works perfectly for most things. :)

Sweet! Lovely cranks those, nice project :)
Just sent you a pm, and yea an 8speed chain will work fine!

Right well after spending this evening researching the different gear ratios I could get with a 1x set-up after @vp1337 sparked the flame.
I think im going to head down the path of making this a 1x7, potentially in the future i could swap out the freehub body and go for a larger 1x10 or so setup. With the rear deralliur I currently have I can go with a 38 front with a 14-32 in the rear witch to me will hopefully be enough range for the riding I will be doing.
This way I can keep my current cranks and the tireless polishing wont go unseen by the world.
This build is certainly going in a different direction to what I had originally planned but I couldnt be more excited!

Sounds great, will continue to follow this with a lot of interest!

I don't want to ruin any plans, but the crank arms do not match. The nondriveside one appears to be a later model.

The original cranks off this bike had the threads shot to bits, ordered these off eBay noticed it once they arrived, nds is the same length and not sure what the word is but tapers away from the frame the same amount so for the time being I had assumed all would be good bar the slight difference in looks.
Unless I can find a spare mc-33 nds crank arm, I reckon I’ll stick it out get the bike all up and running and worry about maybe getting some different cranks then.

It will work just fine. They just look totally different.

Go carbon for the fork and really tart it up...

Haha hopefully my polishing job and the new purple anodised chainring will avert any prying eyes !

Would love that, does look proper bad boy. Went steel for the braze-ones and to save money from converting to disc 🥲

Anyone have any nice ideas for front canti hangers? Not looking to spend the prices of the Paul one!

I have a couple spare; what size is your steerer?
-
• #45
Have a 1 1/8” threadless!

Got one of these in your size: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/254-tektro-alloy-cable-hanger-w-adjuster-black/
Brand new in packaging. You're welcome to it; where abouts are you?

I've found these can sometimes foul the lower headset cup; never had a problem with brake judder with the steerer-mounted ones either.

The one you have looks great, I had not thought about it interfering with the lower cup, I probably won’t be running my steerer mad heigh.
What caused yours to interfere with the headset cup?

The dong that sticks out has to sit against the face of the fork crown hole, which caused it to foul the lower headset cup.
You can just fit a washer/spacer; I had one of the Tektro steerer-mounted hangers lying around so used that.
You can have my Tektro one for a forum donation of your choice.
Nope. I was talking about the regular Nomad - definitely agree the twin crown is a very nice touch.
Reversed bosses - for cantis you’d have to use a widget like the Tektro Power Hanger.
The carbon Thorn fork I have (reversed bosses!) has been a long slow case of buyers remorse for me: Offset looks weird. Awkward to fit a brake and a mudguard. Not that much of a weight-saving, overall. Shoulda gone with steel : )
