• Anyone had any issues with foxes while walking their dogs in London?

Was just out with Benny at the end of our road where there's a small green on the corner and a fox approached from one of the side streets and benny growled and strained at his leash ever so slightly so it ran across the road and hid in a front garden (in sight of me over the top of a parked car) it watched us for a couple of minutes while benny sniffed around in the hope he might find somewhere suitable to drop a poo.

in the end he gave up and we headed back into our road but while we were on the far corner of the green the fox then came across the road and sat on the edge of the green staring at benny. we walked into the street and benny stopped for a sniff a bit further along but this time the fox came trotting towards us at speed in a manner that did not even hint at any kind of caution on its part.

at this point I pull benny to get a move on and hustle him towards the door. the fox comes to the corner about 10m from our front door and sits and watches us go in the building (block of flats). by the time i'm at the first floor window the fox is outside the front door circling.

my gf finally has the courage to take the dog out for a toilet break on her own and be able to handle him by herself (she was very nervous of dogs before him) which reduced my workload somewhat as he needs regular wee breaks every few hours because he drinks like a fish. bit worried about needlessly telling her to be careful and having to do all the trips myself again but also don't want to risk either of them if there is a chance this fox is trouble.

the worst bit is when he sat on the corner watching us go in his eyes did that glowy thing where the streetlights caught them just right to make it even more intimidating.

  • We had a local fox this summer who would follow us on our nightly walk. It was half the size of Sally and would run away as soon as she noticed and barked, but would soon come back and trot quite close. This was over about 200 metres near the house. After a while, it stopped, or went away - there’s stacks of foxes round here, can never tell.

My fave fox experience was living in Hampstead. Walking home late, someone has dropped their takeaway on the pavement (chow mein, iirc). A cat was chomping away at it, while a big dog fox sat patiently 5 feet away, waiting for the cat to let him have some.
