  • Also, I’m sure Ogbonna was trying to stop him from going offside ;)

  • Definitely deserved something out of the game, but when you miss a penalty it's hard to complain too much. Very frustrating that it could have been us top 4 now.

  • I think if you’d asked either of us at the end of last season we’d have been happy with where we were before last night’s game.
I’m also sure you’ll continue to play well and accrue points and wins, a good team to watch (not so much when they’re opponents).

  • This might be the best thing to happen in 2020.

  • ^ I realise that’s a low bar...

  • This won’t get much attention anywhere, but today a guy called Jabo Iberhe announced his retirement from football aged 37. He started his career at my beloved Leyton Orient, coming up through the ranks from the youth squad, and played for us for some 8 years. A striker, he was at best erratic, and was described as “uncoachable” by manager Tommy Taylor. He was a firm fans favourite, always dropping into the supporters club after games, and just a nice guy.
He went on to play for a raft of lower league clubs in a career that spanned just on 20 years, played over 750 games and scored over 150 goals, not a great strike rate but his work rate was always worth more. He was once mistakenly sent off after 34 seconds of a game for violent conduct, which stunned everyone; as his manager said “he hasn’t got a bad bone in him”. It was overturned on appeal.

My abiding memory of him will always be from the final game of the season in 2006 at Oxford Utd, where Orient had to win to secure promotion, and Oxford had to win to avoid relegation from the Football League. With the score at 2-2 and going into injury time, Jabo found himself 1-on-1 with the keeper. He shot well, but the keeper made a fine save. He was absolved when we scored the winner with 17 seconds remaining. Cue the inevitable pitch invasion, where I grabbed a sweaty shirtless Jabo and hugged him. “Mate, what happened with that 1-on-1?!”. He replied, “I shit myself!”

When he left us after 8 years he came into the supporters club and thanked everyone for their support over the years. He always came to games if he was in town and not playing himself. When we were in dire straits he donated his playoff final shirt to be auctioned off. He was surprisingly softly spoken for such a big guy, and was always quite shy, never loud or arrogant. He was, in short, a top guy and a model pro.

I just didn’t want his retirement to go completely unnoticed, that’s all. Enjoy your retirement, Jabo. You’ve earned it.

  • He sounds great.

  • great post. Enjoy your retirement Jabo.

Sounds like a credit to the game.

  • yeah, proper football. Good on him

  • pretty sure I recognise the name from FM and fifa on the playstation. Would often challenge myself to play with the O's as I lived in the flats in the stadium and in the nearby streets for a few years back then. Always shitting himself .
    Happy retirement Jabo

  • did i just spot david moyes in stratford westfield waitrose ? damn these face masks

gave him the eye a couple of times but had to stop staring before it became a bit wierd

  • 4-0 away win at Sevilla. I’m sure that doesn’t happen too often to them.

Giroud is one handsome human being.

  • We drew 0-0 with Sevilla at home only a few weeks ago. Then, we fielded our strongest (at the time) eleven. Yesterday we beat them 4-0 away with our B team. Encouraging signs.

I rather hope that Fat Frank rests Giroud on Saturday and brings him on for the last 20 minutes.

And of course, @jaw is correct.

I must say Arsenal have been kind to us. Ashley Cole, Fabregas, Giroud and, in return, they have given gentle retirement homes to Willian and Luiz and taken Gallas off our hands.

  • Cech had a spell in the Arsenal retirement home too.

  • Which was nice for him. And now he is back and will hopefully play next Tuesday.

I won the ballot to get a ticket for that game, possibly because they couldn't find 2000 people who could be arsed to attend a completely meaningless game in the middle of a very congested period against a side who we beat 4-0 in the away match and who will be playing to hang on to their UEFA League spot. This is why Petr Cech could get a run out alongside the kit man, the physio and a couple of stewards.

Sadly winning the ballot precludes me from applying for tickets again until all season ticket holders have had a chance to see a game.

  • The rules for attendance make me question why I entered the ballot for either Leeds or the CL match.

Fill out and submit a health questionnaire on the day of the game. Print it out and take it with you.
Print out the ticket which will be send by email two days before the match with details of your arrival slot.
Order food and drink in advance (will skip that one)
Bring passport or other official photo id.
No bag larger than A4 which creates issues if one is cycling. How do I manage cycling shoes/normal shoes? May just go in in cycling shoes with cleat covers wearing my helmet.
    Masks to be worn throughout.
List of rules will be sent in advance and have to be read and agreed to. So no abuse of the lino then.

  • May just go in in cycling shoes with cleat covers wearing my helmet

I cycled to Brighton a few seasons back. The stewards wanted to take my helmet off me as I went in as it could be an offensive weapon.

  • Giroud what a performance. Nice he has a champions league hatrick fir Chelsea to go with the europa one. (I think he got one with arsenal to in the CL)
Perfect hatrick too. LF. RF. Header.

  • Magnificent, some moments there just had me smiling from ear to ear... On days like this I absolutely love football, great work, Oli!! 💙💙💙

  • I was in the home end for the Oxford game, 8 year old me in absolute bits when that winner went in. Dark years down there (as you well know!), glad things seem a bit more rosy for both now - never quite understood the anti orient sentiment that emerged amongst ST holders when we ended up in the same league again years later. Apparently Orient celebrated us going down, suspect it may have been them going up...

  • Ouch.... yeah, that was quite a mix of emotions that day. Of course we celebrated like mad, but we’d have been even happier if Oxford had stayed up somehow. If Northampton had won at Grimsby that day then we could have lost and still gone up. There was a fair bit of animosity from U’s fans after that, which I mostly countered by asking what would they have done had the situation been reversed. As you say, it’s good that both teams are on a more stable footing nowadays, your years with Kassam and ours with Bechhetti are best forgotten....

  • There will be several teams who follow suit. Burnley for one. Wouldn’t put it past Chelsea.
