  • I was looking at whistable when I was thinking about moving back to the uk. It’s on the high speed line (ok expensive and not that fast), good schools, amazing period property and a nice town. All of those Kent/ Thanet seaside towns are worth a look imo.

  • I quite fancy Cliftonville. Margate station just round the corner and Walpole Tidal Pool on your doorstep.

  • Builders arrived this morning to start to fix the cracks caused by subsidence in turn caused by a big tree.

The kitchen extension cracking isn't helped by the two walls never being tied together. Slack builders 30 years ago.

Apparently we have some damp coming up a wall/corner. Possibly related to the damp proof course that has been affected by the subsidence and so is going to be at least partly addressed by the work they are doing.

    Owning a house sucks.

  • Looks like an art installation.

  • Lay it flat and fill it with clear epoxy.

  • I'm going to show that to my wife - that's what a real crack in brickwork looks like

  • Actual lol at this

"hey guys, today we're going to be making a river wall. don't forget to like & subscribe!"

  • Ditto

Her response will likely be that at last it won;t be the same in 2 years time, expcept for a covering of cardboard to prevent the baby hitting their head on it.

  • Fuck me that is bad

  • I have so many cracks in the wall, I fear this every single day.
So far 5 different sensible people have told me not to worry about it.
Damp proofing is number 1 on my agenda currently.

  • It's all covered up again with a bit of mesh too. Should be good for another decade or so...

  • I find this kind of thing terrfying, but at the same time slightly reassuring knowing that it can all be fixed.

  • I have so many cracks in the wall, I fear this every single day.

I suspect something similar lurks beneath our plasterwork too.

  • I mean, it hasn’t fallen off yet!

  • When we refurbed our house, we were told cracks you could fit your hand in were annoying, cracks you could fit your body in were problematic... This came from our structural engineer.

I haven't checked prices, but I'd assumed that if we could afford the cost of somewhere nice in Whitstable we could afford somewhere nice in London. In which case I'd be lobbying to move back.

Also it's Kent. And while I'm sure the prestige has pushed natives out, I worry that there might still be a few.

  • Blimey. That looks close to where I'd imagine the bulldoze and start again threshold is.

  • It was pretty far past it, but house has been in the wifes family for 100 years, so sensible approach didn't come into it.

  • Cheers.

I'm not under any illusions about the beauty of the estuary. But it's quite nice being able to walk and play on a beach.

  • Is that yours? Do you have a big house? I hadn't even realised!

On a different note, anyone got any good loft conversion references? I want something a bit more interesting than the usual...

(p.s. I hope you are aware this is meant as friendly jesting, as I am genuinely a little jelly).

  • Ha! Taken fully as friendly jesting, I find it amazing the difference in prices, my house is worth less than most 2 bed flats in zone 2.

  • phew... cant be too careful!
I've actually noticed prices catching up everywhere, friends are buying in Norwich and its no longer cheap as chips...

  • There's bit of a hole in the roof too

  • There's bit of roof in the hole

  • That photo reminds me of Astley Castle (brick patching into original stone walls)
