Carradice Saddlebags

  • Custom amalgamation of an SQR and a classic rack

That is excellent. I would buy one of these, if it were made commercially.

  • All this stuff about rack supports is funny. The best results I’ve had with a carradice is supporting it with pannier rack. Simple.

  • No good for taller folk.

  • Cracked mine and took the screw through the canvas when I clipped a gate.
I just undid it, opened up the crack and put a bit of wood glue in then used some cable ties to clamp it. Then added a washer to the screw.

    Fair

  • Nice fix job. I've kept my old one, so it can be a spare in that case.

  • Sewing patches onto a Carradice, blast it through both layers of the flap or try and only go through the top?

  • Trying to go only through the top is possible but tricky - expect it to be a long job, and to have to unpick some stitches. On the bags that have the waterproof lining to the flap I tried to just sew through the cotton, on the grounds that it might be marginally more waterproof, but on the vintage bags with two layers of cotton I just went through both, which is much quicker and easier. You'll want to use a thimble and a fairly chunky needle - I've broken smaller ones in the past.

(I'm not sure I've ever ridden for any prolonged period of time in heavy enough rain to test whether the waterproofing would make a difference...)

  • Sewing patches onto a Carradice

I just went all the way through; a sturdy needle and a thimble are helpful. I haven’t noticed any wicking through the threads, but I’ve always used a plastic bag for dry clothes and zip-lock bags for electronics anyway—even without sewing patches on it can get a bit moist in there after a couple of hours in the rain.

  • Mine is a Nelson so just the cotton so might as well just go through both layers. Only goes on bikes with full guards so never gets very wet.

@aglet, like that way of doing a carrying strap, might need to copy that.

  • I went through both layers. This is what I did to make sure to keep water out

    1. Re-proof the saddle bag before starting. I rubbed in new wax then used a heat gun to melt it into the canvas. I did this twice.
    2. Scotchgard the patches - use two coats
    3. Use waxed thread

    No water ingress for me.

  • Couple done. Managed to mostly only go through the top layer on the black patch as it’s thinner material so was easier to angle the needle so as not to catch the back layer.

  • Can I buy the bent aluminium part of this separately? I have this already and just want the bag support.

Also one more for Margareta I guess? I imagine it’s hard writing on the silky label. I bought the Audax during lockdown and wish I’d got one earlier.

  • I've never seen them for sale separately. Also I'm pretty sure they're steel and weigh a fair bit. Might be easier, cheaper and lighter to use an aluminium rear rack as the support and just use the saddle clamp part to keep the bag in place (although I appreciate that doesn't work for everyone).

  • I'd just ring/email Carradice and ask them; I'd imagine they might sell you one, as they're pretty good at spares and repairs.

  • I'm looking for a Nelson Longflap, should anyone wanted to get rid of it
    Feel free to DM
    Thanks!

  • My dad is looking to swap his SQR quick release system to a bike that has an aero seat post. Is that possible? Does he need a separate attachment? I would check it out but can't go over there for obvious reasons

  • The SQR block has a 'large bands' option, which is for seatposts up to 40mm diameter, but I guess that's still a bit small (and you'd have to pad the seatpost out to a more circular shape)? You might be able to hack some shape together that fits the seatpost and the block - if you look at the instructions linked from the SJS page there's an exploded drawing on there ( https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/carradice-sqr-quick-release-mounting-block-for-sqr-saddlebag-uplift/ )

Is it a carbon seatpost? I'd be quite leery of tightening the support block on there - I've head various reports of people having failures this way.

  • Wanted to do this for ages before getting around to it! +1 for Margareta

  • Does this count? I carrabodged a mini-pannier as a handlebar bag.
