  • Well I cleaned them out. 23 for £25 seems alright even if a few don't make it. They have some £4 Hostas I might go back for at some point.

These will have to live in pots for a while yet so will upgrade the smaller ones to larger pots and keep them sheltered.

  • Bargain, in a couple of years you’re gonna be knee deep in fern.

  • Some bulbs to put in today. 50 purple sensation Alliums and 30 daffodils.

  • Nice, I love alliums. Especially enjoy that whole plant and forget thing you get with bulbs, I planted a bunch last winter, and it was a nice surprise when they reared up in early spring.

  • Well, it's been a long day but we finished the new hedge for now. 73 bare root whips planted. I did most of the digging, and I'm definitely feeling it now. It was dark when we finished, so excuse the poor photo. They're not exactly photogenic anyway...

P.S. That's only a tiny fraction of the amount we planted.

  • Just installed one of these bad boys - cheap metal garden arch and star jasmine (trachleospermums).

It will of course look like this, soon, without any special attention. Right?

  • Nice - we got one of those arches via neighbourhood freecycle but it'll probably rust through / collapse in a year or two (it's a bit bent already and looks cheaper than yours!). Was pondering getting one made in solid steel rod for a bit more longevity. Anyone got recommendations for a company that makes a better quality garden arch? Otherwise will ask a fabricator.

  • That one is off eBay, made by Tom Chambers:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tom-Chambers-Classic-Metal-Garden-Arch-Traditional-Black-Sturdy-Arch-/254623855233

It's made of hollow square tubing. Seems solid enough, I'm probably more worried it'll blow over in the wind once the plants have gotten big, than rust through. Drilled some holes in four bricks and put it in that with some gripfill at the bottom of the planters, to try and add sturdiness.

  • Might drill a U bracket into the wood at the edge of the bed, on the left side of the arch, for extra security.

And if it starts to rust above the soil, just brush it off and repaint? I guess if it rusts below soil level the first I know will be when it falls over.

  • Definitely a good days work, shovelling all day when you’re not doing it regularly is a killer. I dug out and filled a large greenhouse base last week and I still don’t think I’m walking straight.

  • Cheers. Probably didn't help that I'd shifted 850kg of 40mm slate 2 days before. Turns out 850kg wasn't enough - there's another 850kg arriving tomorrow. My poor vertebrae...

You are one of my classmates circa 1979 AICMFP

  • wHaT u SaYiN fAm?!?!?!?!?!!

  • Flippin' 'eck Tucker

  • I can relate to that. I think I've bought over 60sqm of membrane in the last 6 months. I have none left.

  • Not sure if best for here or Home DIY, but any go-to bifold/sliding door suppliers for garden rooms? 4x3m room

  • Put the first 20 or so Alliums in at lunchtime in a patch where I'd dug some homemade compost in in summer.
It's improved the soil quality no end!
Great selection of worms in there.
Bamboo stakes in to ward off digging foxes.
    Scattered a-la Monty.
