What tier do we think London will be in come the 3rd of December?
-
• #17803
Tier 2 (guess).
-
• #17804
This will be a major issue I suspect.
-
• #17805
Yeah - I'm sure it'll be 2. There'll be a few tier 3 up north for another couple of weeks before the Christmas bacchanalia commences but they'll want to keep most places open.

Makers of Russia's Sputnik vaccine trolling Oxford pretty hard:

That's what worries me - people getting the first dose then carry on as though they're superman, despite the vaccine not being properly effective until after the second dose - which they don't go back for...
If there's a 15% dropout rate between the first & second doses in the trial what's it going to be like in the general population? This combined with the various conspiracy theory twats & the sort of folk that will ingest vast quantities of random pills / dubious powders every weekend but not a medical product as they "don't know what's in it mate" gives me the mild fear

Two seems likely but by all accounts there is still a lot of political haggling going on at the moment.

Using the gov post code website which gives you information about how your local area is doing, my old postcode in Bethnal Green seems much worse than my current address in Levenshulme, S. Manchester. I still reckon London will be 2 and Manchester 3 though.

Qantas have said international passengers will need to be vaccinated. If enough businesses make similar rules then that will provide an incentive for people to get both doses.
There needs to be a route for those that can't have the vaccine, eg because they are immunocompromised.

Ooo, I can play that game! My student address in Longsight is 3 times worse than my current address in Barnet.
-
• #17812
What an utter nonsense comparison.
-
• #17813
I'm on the border of Longsight, I'm surprised mine is as low as it is as Owens park campus is within mine.
-
• #17814
Haha I realise this and honestly wasn't meant to prove anything, more of a general observation using the only 2 postcodes I know.
-
• #17815
Also, with possible side effects including headaches - I worry that if loads of people get wiped out by headaches for a couple days after dose 1, how keen will they be to get the bigger dose 2 a few weeks later? Like you say, drop out rate could be significantly higher in general population.

The RNA vaccines will be suitable for immuno-compromised patients.

How are you supposed to counter antivaxxers?
-
• #17818
Get vaccinated against them?

the only 2 postcodes I know

Starting to look like lockdown is working as hoped. 11,299 cases today.
608 deaths...hopefully deaths will peak soon too.

Fucked if I know; unfortunately, the one thing we do know is that ridiculing science deniers just makes them dig in. The pat answer is that you need to meet them where they are, understand their underlying concerns, and then lead them gently towards the light. Easier said than done, and hard to do at scale.

I've never understood where anti-vaxxers even come from. Normally, if people have bonkers views there's at least the possibility of constructing some kind of rationale, e.g. of working out what it is they've misunderstood. With anti-vaxxing, I've never even got to first base when attempting that.

Interesting.
Is there any group with a good reason not to have a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine of one sort or another?
-
• #17824
Yeah, it's the worst. I tried convincing my mum and she said 'but there papers on pubmed who say vaccines are bad', I asked if she'd also read the papers that say those papers are bullshit but she doesn't trust those because they are funded by instances who have a financial interest in vaccines.

Anti-vaxx "Don't want a vaccine, Bill Gates wants to put microchips in me"
Elon Musk "I also will refuse a vaccine, but I will put an actual implant in your brain"
Anti-vaxx "He is a god-king, put it in me first"
15% of people who had the two part vaccine in the trials never showed up for the second dose.
