I was thinking 24" as I'll be using it as a 2nd work screen too & not horrendously expensive.

Imagine how far you'd have to sit away from that!
I will actually be in the market for a affordable but usable monitor in the not too distant future, I'm just using a cheap work one at the moment & it's not great!
