It was definitely guilt that kept him away from the Pridelands - although he was persuaded of that by Scar and urged to leave as part of his coup d'etat. Scar did send the hyena's after Simba to try to kill him; they gave up when Whoopie Goldberg didn't want to chase him into the thorns at the edge of the kingdom.
Simba wouldn't have known that though, and could have thought that the hyena encounter was a random one rather than a hit ordered by his uncle.
I left my 5ish year old alone with this film, I think she was traumatised by the death of Mufasa
