  • While it's not exactly the same, with La Pavoni lever machines it's common to grind slightly coarser and use a little less pressure as otherwise there's a tendency for the water to channel around the outside of the puck. I've yet to do a side-by-side (or even measure the pressure I'm putting through) so can't give anything definitive there.

  • Could anyone with a Peak Water filter do me a favour and take a picture of the insidie of the jug when their indicator set to the Release position please? My indicator came off when I was putting a new filter in so I want to make sure that I have put it back together how it is supposed to be. (I have checked the PW site and I think that I have set it up correctly but want to check).

  • Weird review. His recipe and technique are literally different from any other that I've read on the entire Home Barista Robot thread.

    He's also pressing on the arms super weird. Does he not understand how leverage works?

    Also also, puck lift? What's he on about? Never had this issue.

    Also also also - it doesn't sound like he even tried to pull a shot without pre-heating. Why would he do that? Surely he knows that one of the biggest selling points is no pre-heating?

  • Him complaining about the arms was the funniest bit as he was choking up on the shafts (oh, er) so much that the work load must have doubled.
    The puck lift thing; how does he know what causes the puck to adhere to the screen rather than the portafilter? Mine can go either way and doesn't seem to affect the pour.
    No pre-infusion is kind of odd to me.
    He missed the part about the perceived looseness of the portafilter being inherent in the design as it immediately tightens up when pulling the shot.
    He says it's finicky yet from what I've read a pump machine has a much smaller window for a good shot and obviously requires much more upkeep to make sure you can still open that window.
    It sounds a bit like he approached it in a way like Hoffmann did, not reading all through the manual...

  • is there a forum preference for clever dripper vs the hario switch version? (the latter is out of stock everywhere it seems)

    i'm trying to add some excitement into my regular pourover method ...

    ps beans wise ... what's everyone having? I've been ordering from square mile all lockdown and also feel like its time for a change.

  • IMO the clever dripper is annoying. Could never get any consistency out of it due to the filters always clogging. Also tracking down filter papers is a pain. IMO the switch is better, but I basically use it as a pourover so.

  • I have the switch but expect you would get very similar results with the clever - the whole immersion element reduces variability, right? I was using a standard V60 before I got it and not having to start sourcing different filters etc is nice and I just prefer the way the Hario looks.

  • good to know, where did you get your switch btw? i can't find one in stock ...

  • Is the idea with the switch to grind courser than a normal V60, allowing a longer steep followed by a relatively quick draw down? I wouldnt want to buy anything that required more expensive or difficult to source papers than the V60 already requires.

  • Yeah, exactly that. I quite like it, makes a good cup and feels like it needs a bit less attention than the standard v60 which is nice when running around getting things together in the morning.

    Lol, I found the whole thing fairly annoying to watch and generally unpalatable anyway. It's a very modern problem - finding reviewers who you actually trust/agree with. Youtube is flooded with reviewers who review products in the stupidest ways. So many tool reviews love to throw tools through pointless tests and extrapolate ridiculous outcomes from them - drives me up the wall. Particularly as people then just start to parrot the reviews as some sort of gospel, despite their lack of experience with them*.

    *I may be slightly guilty of this last bit tbf.

  • Yeah - on the Hario UK site it doesnt list the dripper only as a thing, only the full set with decanter thats sold out at £75.

    Loads of their stuff is sold out too. Imagine being involved in home coffee brewing is a bit like bikes during a global lockdown. Demand will have outstripped supply by quite a margin and everyone's supply chains are messed up.

  • I ordered myself a Timemore C2 and a gooseneck kettle with a thermometer on AliExpress. I'm upgrading from a Rhino and a really basic and shitty electric kettle so I'm quite excited to up my V60 game!
