Been looking for the most cost effective way to give my wife an easier climbing gear on her hybrid.
She currently has a 50-34 upfront and 12-32 (8 speed Claris) on the back, which was ok in London but not so good further north.
I've just had the idea of getting something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-TY501-Square-Speed-Chainset-FCTY501C888CLB/dp/B01HI6HAO2/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=sub+compact+chainset&qid=1606080882&quartzVehicle=778-1197&replacementKeywords=sub+chainset&sr=8-1 and setting it up to only use the middle and small rings. Would also likely change the cassette and chain at the same time as they have 3 years of wear on them now.
In a perfect world would go for a sub compact chainset but the bike is only worth about £100 and we will get her something different before too long, but need an interim solution.
Is this theoretically doable, or just a terrible idea?
Edit: She isn't one for sending it on descents so not too concerned about spinning out at the top end.
