  • I had “possible” patella tendonitis. I run a lot a cycle a fair bit.
    The doc proscribed 3 remedies
    1) very expensive custom foot beds (instant improvement)
    2) foam roller (sorted IT band)
    2) these declined squats (helped a lot)

    But speak to a doc

  • Very much doubt it, but interesting you say that as I have also moved which room it's in

And changed to a new turbo.

  • Only asking as a friend had a similar issue and it was solved by his physio finding out that his trainer was leaning ever so slightly to one side.

  • Got a call booked with NHS physio and already seen a private physio a few times but wondering if anyone's experienced similar:

I've been having hip back and leg problems a few times over the last year, but over the last few weeks it's manifested in the back of my knee, pretty bad out of all the symptoms I've had. I'm fine if I keep moving but standing up after sitting down, not even for very long sometimes, the hamstring seems to spasm and hurts like hell. It takes a few moments and concerted effort to fully relax and allow me to walk again. Also after sitting for a long time at my desk, walking will feel like the left Biceps Femoris has some tension and is shortening my step on the left as well as rotating my shin outwards as I step forward. After a couple of minutes walking this sensation more or less goes away.

This came on quite suddenly over a couple of days. I do wonder if it's something like Bicep Femoris Tendinopathy although the physio thought it was probably more in inflexibility in the sciatic nerve, but the pain seems so specifically placed now, rather than along the whole leg. When sitting I can't lift my foot more than a few inches off the floor.

I was doing some long hours without break (at desk) in the spring which I feel might have cause my hip flexors to get weak, hence my Gluteus Medeus giving me grief before, and now the hamstring where they're overcompensating for the weak hips. Doing lots of bridge, hydrant, hip and glutes excersizes as well as some stretches and trying to take regular breaks from the desk, but nothing seems to be getting much better. It's starting to get me down a bit if I'm honest.

  • To update on this^ my X-ray and blood tests came back clear, so that leaves it looking like a muscular issue. I'm self diagnosing as tendinopathy of the bicep femoris until a physio can tell me something more tangible.

Unfortunately I've read this can take up to 6 months to clear up, but cracking on with exercises to strengthen glutes and I'm now standing most of the day for work which helps a lot.

  • Had alot of issues with the left knee, ended off with one of these. Not much better, not sure if it was worth it.

  • Is that a full replacement? I’ve never seen one in an x-ray before.

  • Yip, full replacement, even done the underside of the kneecap. I would like to say it was a good job. . But. . .I would be lieing. Less flex and more pain. It's taken ages to get bike fit again
It took me two hours to ride 13 mile.

  • Been getting knee pain for a while. Doesn't feel like typical knee pain - it's not a joint pain etc - it feels more like a cut or graze on the skin, but it's internal. Never had this before, it's not really painful and doesn't stop me riding, but feels odd. Feel like I've damaged it probably a few months ago and it's just not healed properly. Anyone had this before?

  • Anyone suffered from a constant dull awareness of their IT band? I've had IT band issues in the past and have worked to correct it, built strength in posterior chain and improved mobility. I don't often get pain now when exercising but can always just feel the outside edge of my knee. Not even an ache, it's just like it's there.

Will seek out advice of a professional post-isolation but in the meantime, anyone had this?

  • Yep, but also not done anything about it. Seems to improve when I do a good variety of physical activities, and get worse when if I just altinate between sitting at a desk and cycling.

  • I just cut a tour short because of anterior (pain at the front) knee pain. I think my Q-factor was too wide (using a triple crank as a double with a hefty BB), and it got super painful after five days. Does anyone have any exercise recommendations? I'm foam rolling mainly atm.

  • If it’s still painful I’d avoid rolling the antagonised bit. But might be worthwhile rolling the bits around it for release as long as it doesn’t cause agitation to the angry parts.

  • Thanks. I've stayed away from the bike for five days now, but might have a gentle roll today - no pain whilst walking. I've been reading through the thread and it definitely seems the cold exacerbated it (I was touring in NL, Belgium and Luxembourg, brrrr). I only had shorts with me, and some chilly starts.

  • I started my tour April 22nd and by end of April 25th I was in pain at the front of the knee. I kept riding for 3 more days in agony because I didn't want to stop. Had to sit on my arse in Germany for 2 weeks but got going again and feel good now, almost 2 months in and having made some small fit changes.

I was doing exercises post "injury" that you can find on most Youtube videos on the subject but Im sure rest is what solved it really. Which was tedious to say the least.

I also took collagen + glucosamine capsules among other things. Hard to tell if it helped but certainly didn't hurt.

I remember going for a spin afterwards and it still hurt and I was gutted but realised I'd only been off the bike for 5 days or so. Its not enough, I think its 2 weeks minimum in most cases which is naturally shite for a tour with a time limit.

  • Sorry to hear that Stoo. Thanks for sharing, it sounds very similar to my experience. Rest it is!

  • My ITB syndrome is back. I had to stop a tour early because of it and that's been the prompt to make a concerted effort at tackling it: glute activation, glute exercises & mobility. Can't afford physio at the moment.
I've rested now for around two weeks save for a couple of short bike rides, and been doing physio for a week and a half or so. Sat here tonight feeling disheartened as I can feel a load of tension down the leg of my bad knee, can essentially feel the ITB across my knee and it's clicking as I bend my knee. Anyone experienced this before? Am I doing too much too soon? All I'm doing is dogwalking (short, the dog is injured too) and my physio in terms of movement.

  • ^ been there in the past. Found recovery times varied, but basically it takes as long as it takes. Would expect a couple of months for it to fade. Generally always found walking OK, so long as I took it easy on slopes and stairs. Other thing I found helped (and still do) was long, daily leg stretches on all the main muscles. Mine gets aggravated by tight quads.

  • Have you tried foam rolling? This really helped when I once had ITB related knee pain.

  • Thanks both. Facing down extended rest is pretty hard to take! It is what it is though I guess. I actually did try some rolling last night, so will try and keep that up with some stretching and ease off the physio exercises a little. Will restart writing in my "knee journal" to try and join the dots between cause and effect a bit too.

  • Good luck with it - hope you can sort it out.

  • Summer spending is cooling off a bit so have finally made enquiries with a physiotherapist. I've been doing the exercises and v little riding and no running, not seeing an improvement so time to go to a professional. It's really getting me down tbh.

  • Physio last night, finally. It was a interesting session. Went through some mobility and movements then the physiotherapist moved my legs around and did some resistance checks. He concluded that essentially it's my adductors (inside of thigh) that are weak and I have a set of exercises based on that. Really interesting that, based on the weird sensation on the outside of my knee, I'd decided it was ITB based and so had been strengthening my abductors! Obviously it's too soon to know anything for sure but excited to see what happens. Maybe most exciting is that he doesn't think there's an injury per se, and so I'm all clear to start up some gentle exercise again.

  • Hello fellow knee pain sufferers, have been having on-off knee pain for a while which has been attributed to vastus medialis tendinopathy. Weirdly it only comes on when riding my road bike but miraculously the fixie doesnt seem to have that same issue. I've really tried to fiddle around with the setup of the road bike but does anyone have any suggestions for common fixes that I may have overlooked? I've tried some physio exercises but am almost at a point of fear of riding my road bike.

    Cheers all

  • It’s been a decade since I had my MCL and PCL rebuilt and last year I thought I would take up some light jogging as I live near a big green space and figured my knee could handle running on dirt and having some light impact exercise would help ward off osteoporosis.

This week my knee has been the most painful it has been since all the surgery. It’s stiff and hurts to bend it all the way. Kneeling is unpleasant.

    Bugger.

Hoping i can wrangle a scan on the work private health insurance to figure out what’s up with it.
