My mid-90’s custom Sonic mtb has an original Dia-Compe Aheadset (Dia-Compe invented the aheadset) which Helmut Berns picked up in the US at one of the big trade shows. It was probably the first one in the UK. It had a plastic top cap, which we thought was a bit cheap but it was deliberately made from plastic to stop people from over-torquing the headset bearings. It’s still on the bike today.
I didn't realise this was a thing. At what torque does it start destroying the star nut though..?
