For a road bike. Even better if they’re deep.
Wrong thread tho

We’re not talking about 40mm tyres on 40mm rims.
-
• #14179
No but 28mm tyres on ~30mm mm rims ... which would be a liability off road.

50mm tyres on 18mm rims. #likeaboss

Only time that combo is going off road is in a crash.

What do you run?

Off-road in the gravel thread = towpath or perhaps a dusty driveway?

We’re not talking about 40mm tyres on 40mm rims.
But why not.

just the right thing for those famous British winters.

My tyre pressure is determined by how low I can go and still not fuck up my rims hitting a curb like a fool.
[ this is the result of a particularly techy ride, hustling a cx bike with a bunch of mtbers ... feeling like a boss for having survived (with no flats) and then killing my rear rim bunglehopping a mini roundabout 5mins from my front door ]

I use to pride myself on never bothering to inflate the tyres on the commuter. 23mm tyres at <40psi when you're >90kg makes for some interesting line choices when potholes are about.
I've been doing some MTB trails recently on an MTB and a gravel bike (because I didn't know they were MTB trails until I got to the singletrack). So far, so good although I won't be riding the MTB trails on the Tripster again :S It's doable but not exactly sensible.

I used to run 55mm tyres on 16mm rims. What do I win?

MTBs don't count. Everyone did that 20 years ago.
The thing is, on the road wider seems better because you get better aeros and a grip due to the nice round profile. Surely on the grav your priorities change and you actually want something a little narrower (proportionally) for some sidewall protection and to allow a bit of sidewall flex to get the benefit of the larger tyre... Naturally it’s all a trade off though and you want the opposite for actually getting to the grav.
Edit: sorry @Lolo, I shouldn’t have taken it to a new page!
