Recovery mode doesn't work... never arrives in the recovery menu as it loops the startup sound after the initial Apple logo disappears.

Other people seem to be having the same problem, and are piecing together the clues:

What about not internet-, but regular recovery mode ([cmd] + [r] on startup, release when the apple shows)?
