Have you tried the usual PRAM/NVRAM resets, safe mode + verbose boot etc?

Tried all the things... I think Apple are going to have to give me a new one.

Thankfully I only use a web browser, so there's no data loss.

Yep, most likely some kind of EFI b0rk. Had similar happen to a couple of older Macs.
