• In that case bottom of the range e30 with no sunroof.

MK1 is easy to work on, but finding one that isn't rusty.

  • with no sunroof

Great minds think alike. An e28 would be my first choice but e30 would mean more space around the car to work and move. Avoiding a rotten one is definitely sound advice but will be getting a welder eventually so hopefully helps.

@ricky2slicky neither MR2 nor Boxter get me excited personally, 944 maybe, but again I think they're probably out of my price range. No love for the MGB?

  • No love for the MGB?

Don’t know owt about them. Look sexeh tho.

  • That MGB looks great, but is about as far from original as it is possible to get. I have had several and in standard trim they look great but are very slow, don't go round corners and don't stop, don't get me started on the lights.... £5k would get a very good 3.0i Z4, it's what I paid for mine, a very different level of performance!

  • I saw a great E28 525 for sale recently, just got to remember where.

  • ahh, if my memory has been jogged sufficiently, you had a really tidy, well sorted NA or NB MX5 previously; correct?
If the Boxter/MR2 don't get you going I can understand that. 944's have been dragged up with the prices of 911's going bonkers. I love MGB's/BGTs but I'd just worry that getting a nice, solid example might be hard given your budget and making a nice car out of a rough one will break your heart and your wallet. Sports and classic cars shouldnt always make sense though. If I was going for something like that I'd probably go for a Midget/Healey Sprite as I always like the size of them. Then again, a cursory glance on car and classic makes me think this > https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1283177 could be a load of fun...
Maybe I'm the person to take any advice from.
