It depends what you mean by utilising.
Linux does so just fine.
OSX does so just fine.
Windows though... if a Windows session starts locally and a program is started at that time, i.e. Plex Server then it will utilise the GPU. But if you login via remote desktop and start Plex, then this is considered a remote session and the GPU is actually disabled for programs that you start under that session. So AFAIK it's a Windows issue, and if I really want something to start with GPU support I set it as a startup program and will reboot the machine if I am remote.

This is what I vaguely remembered. I want to stick a machine (Windows) in a cupboard under the stairs and use RDP through a lightweight laptop for CPU/GPU intensive things but that sounds a bit annoying.
Did you try this? Looks like it may resolve the issue.

I tried a few things, none worked. There are options that apparently do work on Windows Server or Professional, but I have Windows Home installed.

I've got a spare retail W10 Pro key if you want to try upgrading. It's not a reinstall needed, just a reboot. Consider it a forum donation :D

I connected (first time in months)... and it is a Pro :D

Cheers.
I guess I do have a PC with Win 10 Pro and a graphics card so I could just experiment and see what does and doesn't work.

Anyone know any secret places with a stash of 3080’s in stock?

Just discovered a Windows tip. Fully prepared to discover that everybody already knew this before I did.

Broke my cheapo USB-C to Display Port adapter so I'm down to one monitor tomorrow (I can open the laptop to use that display I suppose.)
Handily I'd just ordered a USB-C to DP cable for future monitor purchase so it should only be a day or so.
Productivity is going to go through the floor though. That or I'll stop constantly looking at LFGSS/Email/SM on the second monitor and actually get some work done.

Graphics cards, monitors and the stuff supported by using different cables. Monitor supports up to 3440x1440, 100Hz and has Display Port and HDMI.
Graphics card has HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and Dual-link DVI. Which cable do I need to take full advantage of the monitor?
I have a feeling that it requires DP to DP which is pretty much the only cable I don't have.

Looks almost identical to 4k 60Hz in terms of pixels per second. Would expect HDMI 2.0 to be ok with that.

Cheers. That is a cable I have so I guess the obvious is to test it and see.

This is a pretty darn good spec for the money especially for a few cheeky games when no ones looking brief.
You won't get a 3x series nvidia card for realistic prices for a good few months.
New AMD chips are sounding pretty sweet though -

Where's good for comparing graphics cards and the like? Specifically I want to compare how my old graphics card (GTX 970 4GB) compares to current on-board graphics.

I use this site

and / or this one

I recently built my own PC after 20+ years on a Mac. So far so good!
Now, anti virus. Any suggestions on which software to buy?

Stick with the inbuilt Windows 10 one, it's absolutely fine.
-
• #6621
Cheers. That only goes up to 8th Gen intel but it looks like an old graphics card is still way more powerful than the inbuilt stuff.

I have naffed one of the USB c ports on my thinkpad X280. the one that charges the thing. I'm currently using the other weird one that is for attaching a dock or something.
I would like to replace the broken one. does anyone know anywhere good for doing this?
Thanks

It's only a couple of years old, no? Is it not under warranty?
If so... you may be lucky that they will come to your house and fix it for free.
If not... I'd still consider actually seeing how much Lenovo would charge for a new on-site warranty and then use that.

ah it is unfortunately no longer under warranty.
thanks!
Is there an issue with utilising graphics cards (in the host machine) over remote desktop? I'm sure I remember reading something on here but I can't find it. Maybe it was @Velocio who mentioned it?
