Saluki x Whippet mum and Greyhound dad.
Is there a better choice of three breeds for speed?

OT, but thought this would be a good place to source opinions.
What are peoples views on fish tanks? Are they cruel?
Follow up question is whether anyone knows what the Internet calls fish-free fish tanks, all my search combinations bring up some kind of maintenance cycling.

Depends on the size of the dog and tank, I’d say.

The very definition of optimism

I don't think tanks are cruel in their own right. It's more the whole fish breeding industry that's a problem.
breeding for looks rather 5han health leads to widespread health problems.
undesirable looking fish are culled
lots of tropical fish are wild caught and shipped in polystyrene boxes...many dont survive.
fish "painting". The act of injecting a dull looking fish with dyes to make them look more interesting. Fish often die from stress or dye toxicity.
I used to be a very keen fish botherer. Even got into breeding for a while. It's a very rewarding hobby but the collateral damage to the environment and direct damage to the fish that are bought and sold is problematic.
On the other hand, not too dissimilar to how shitty the dog breeding industry is . I'd like to own fish again one day but my choice of breed would be different now days.

Thanks.
I guess me and my OH just find it feels a bit fucked up when you see all the fish in the shops swimming about.
But aesthetically I really like fish tanks.

check out Foo the Flowerhorn on youtube, this might be the fishless fish tank you are hoping for?
It's not without marine life, but less fish and more diversity.
(edit: not so much the Flowerhorn vids, they are clearly a fish, but lots of plantlife tanks vids)

Is anyone on the Battersea waiting list atm?
I've registered but by the sounds of things could be waiting a very long time. Think it's the same for RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross.

We registered with the usual suspects in November 2016 and they said they had a queue of 3 months due to Christmas. I expect the wait is longer this year given Covid has inspired lots of pet ownership?
You can try more specialist rehoming charities: older greyhounds, or foreign street dogs, etc?
We adopted Maurice through Ibizian Hound Rescue and can't recommend them enough.

foreign street dogs
There seem to be quite a few rescue dogs from Romania about at the moment. I was chatting to a couple with a lovely what they reckoned was a GSD crossed with something (as they often seem to be) - they said they'd had no luck trying to get a dog locally for some time, hence why they looked further afield. I guess a lot of people are in a similar position?

Awww cute.
Re prey drive - our poodle is mental at the moment. Something about autumn but as soon as he gets in the woods he's off pronking through the leaves and chasing down squirrels. He comes back (eventually) but it is a little annoying.

I feel a bit bad about the size of most of them, goldfish in the wild grow 12 - 14 inches in length, in tanks they grow 1 - 2 inches. I'd love a nice fish tank to look at but I wouldn't feel right having one under at least 5 foot long and nearly as deep and there's no way that's fitting in my flat. Plus all the cleaning they need.

I'll only be impressed if he comes back WITH the squirrel.

Not a chance. It would have to be missing a few legs. He got pretty close to a magpie today but I think it was just f**king with him.
That said he is rapid and agile as you like so I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to catch something when he gets a bit more savvy.

Scotty is a Romanian rescue, he's pretty cool. Got him from https://www.halfwayhome-dogrescue.org/ mostly Facebook/messenger based communication.

He’s lovely! Any idea what he is? They seem to all have that sort of look as if they’re a cross with something shepherdey and then maybe a lab?

No idea, lucky dip dog.

Bit more googling and I came across a "planted tank" reddit - so I guess that's what it's called. Going to do some more reading at some point, but from a cursory scan of one thread you can design a tank that doesn't need cleaning if you exclude fish.

my little shitbag has finally realised how much fun it is to play "no take, only throw" and started jerking his head back and jumping back while simultaneously trying to get you to interact/play with him when he has a ball.
it's annoying as fuck but unfortunately the fucker also manages to make it really endearing as he is very clearly playing and not just being a possessive dick about it.

• #1923
Do it! Be warned that it's a proper rabbit hole though. You'll have co2 infusion before you know it

It's taken me the best part of a month to get our Cocker to drop the ball to continue playing.
Spaniels always want to trade - So we started carrying two balls and only throwing the second one when she dropped the first. Yesterday we didn't need the second ball anymore, out of nowhere! SO pleased.

benny is a gentle sod so he normally lets me just take it out of his mouth even if he doesnt drop it but yeah I use the 2 ball method down the park as he'll drop one to chase the other and i dont have to chase him around the floor by my feet instead.
gorgeous !!!
