Maybe some kind of improvised lathe with a drill or something.

All starting to make sense. Cheers

Heya. I have a conundrum here. I have a Sutra with risers on 1 x 11 setup (rival long cage/slx casette + apex trigger) as a everything bike. Takes me on some hikes during weekends and gets me to where I need to go every other day. Or at least it used to. Since I've got one of them young'uns my time on a bike drastically reduced and last proper shenanigan outdoors was last August. So with that in mind and looming cross-country move happening next year, keeping 1x11 setup is costly and arguably silly. I'd convert it to singles peed but on the off-chance of some magic happening, and me having some free time allowing for adventures, I'd like an option of at least some gears. So my idea was to keep rival rd and just chuck a 7/8 speed cassette on it and use a thumbie friction shifter for it. Is it a stupid idea? would it work? How would I go about it? As far as I know there are just couple thumbie friction shifters that would work for 11sp and they are quite $$. Or I could get a jtec yoke or one of them problem solvers. But would vanilla 8sp thumbie work with 8sp cassette with rival rd?

You've already got the kit. Will keeping an eye on chain wear and replacing appropriately really cost more than buying a new set of components? 8 speed components wear out too.

^That, just buy a chain wear guage and then swap your chain out on time and you'll get through like 3 or 4 chains before needing to do the cassette, which is a good 4000 miles or more for £50-£60 if you shop around for cheap chains.

It’s an idea worth exploring. In principle:
-You could install an 8sp cassette with some spacers to fit on the 11sp freehub.
-An 8sp non-indexed friction shifter would work, no need to get an 11sp if you’re swapping cassettes. Also doesn’t need to be a fancy one, as long as it’s non indexed. If you get an indexed one (that clicks into each gear), you might encounter issues with the rear derailleur not shifting properly. The concerns would be:
-Would the rear derailleur shift? Initially I don’t see why it wouldn’t with a non indexed shifter, but 1x11sp SRAM setups might have a weird derailleur movement arc or something. Bear in mind that derailleurs are designed to move in a predetermined pattern, and that this pattern takes into account the amount of cable pulled by the shifter, which varies by manufacturer and groupset. If you don’t take cable pull into account, you might not be able to use a cog or two.
-Would the wider 8sp chain fit in the rear derailleur? I’m not sure, worth checking.- Would the wider chain prematurely wear away at your 11sp chainring and derailleur wheels, or cause dropping issues? Not sure.

I'm wondering about replacing the battery in a cheap light that has lost so much runtime it's not really worth taking out any more. Does anyone have a useful source of Li-ion cells (specifically a LIR2477)?

That's what I was thinking. Good to know that I can use any bolt then.
Still don't know why manufacturers use a special bolt for it. -

why manufacturers use a special bolt for it.
To keep a 5mm bolt and large washer centred in a 6mm wide slot

I have a Race Face bottom bracket like the one pictured - the one 'notorious' for not lasting very long in all the reviews. It's in a 68mm shell so it has all three spacers fitted. When first fitted it was a snug fit on the crank axle with no play. It hasn't knocked the bearings out, but the axle has some side-to-side float now it's been in a few frames. I'm speculating the plastic spacers have compressed slightly. Is this normal for these types of bottom brackets? I'm thinking it needs shimming or something to take out the gap.

is a 3/32" chain an option?

It's normal for plastic spacers. Get metal ones.

I had a feeling that might be the case. Seems silly to have something where the width relies on compressible spacers. Torque it up a little on the high side and let's say it tightens 1/8th turn too far on both sides, it'll go around 0.25mm too narrow and knock side to side. Don't torque it up enough and it'll probably put too much side load on the bearings when the cranks are tightened up.

Yep, ditch the plastic rings. I learnt the hard way with a Shimano 24mm BB that lasted all of a couple of weeks after being fitted with the plastic spacers it came with.

Riding with flat shoes on Garmin Vector pedals. Could that damage them or mess with the calibration?
My 'winter' bike is now also my daily do everything bike and want to avoid swapping pedals every other day if I can, but also don't want to wear cycling shoes to pop to the shops.

Chains are comparingly similarly priced, but cassettes not so much. Especially for a range I wouldn't be using for 99% of times. you could probs acquire 8sp cassette, chain and some nice shifter for a price of just one slx cassette i have on now .

That's why initially I wanted to go with friction shifter that would accommodate 11sp cassette, that way you could swap to and from different cassettes with minimum hassle. However using sram road rd becomes a problem and while it's not without solutions it is way more expensive as to just downgrade shifter with cassette.
I'm not too concerned about chainring as it is one of the direct mount steel ones on sram crankarms. Cheap as chips and very durable.
Sprockets. I'm pretty sure would be okay as I had them swapped for generic tourney ones for a bit, while I looked to replace bearings on original ones, and it did a job, however unsexy it was. Clearing the cage might be different story, will have to measure.

TMI, I am concerned as to what you type regularly that your autocorrect made this amendment for you.

Just an 11 speed chain and wear guage is cheaper than all the other stuff, once you've gone through 3 or 4 of them and need a new cassette then maybe downgrade everything then, or grab an 11-34 or whatever else is cheapest for about £45, still have most of the gears you need for most riding, maybe 11 speed will be cheap by then as everything will be 12 speed.

Buy a hollow pool noodle and split it lengthwise, some further modification may be required
for example

It's inviting it straight back out again. Anything in the voids created by the waves will go no further because the next thing in the stack up is the bearing shield.
