• the router of which can’t be put into bridge mode

Do you need it to? Unless you need the features of a fancier modem/router then I'd think you can probably skip the W9970, keep the Plusnet router, switch wifi off but still have it doing DHCP, then have the Deco's do the wifi.

  • See this is what I don’t know about. Now you mention it - if the Deco was doing the routing, I would want the 8 port switch plugged into that, right?

So I guess the benefits of a new modem would be

    1. Better info/ logging
    2. If Deco is better at DCHP? Or I want to control it from deco interface
    3. If I want to put a raspberry pi in later to handle DCHP and that stuff (no reason can’t buy modem later)
    4. ?

Shouldn't matter. As long as everything's on the LAN side of the router then they'll figure it out. The switch will happily work if it's plugged into the deco, or the LAN side of the plusnet router, or if it's daisy chained off another switch.

    Better info/ logging

Maybe. Though once it's all set up then probably not something you'll actually look at?

DHCP is pretty straightforward. As long as only one thing on the network is allocating addresses then you'll be good. Shouldn't matter really if it's the Deco or the Plusnet router. Should all be configurable and should work easily enough.

I suspect the TP Link modem wont be much better or worse than the Plusnet one. If only to save £35 then I'd skip it for now and buy the rest of the stuff, then you can always add it in a week later if you're having issues.
It's also often slightly easier to get support from the ISP when you're using their kit. If you start out with telling them you've replaced their modem then they may well shrug and say they can't be sure you've configured your modem right (or at least, I've had that at least once in the past)
