Anyone with an allotment?

Nice. I'm trying to up my composting game this year. Layered up a load of wood chips, leaves, food waste, grass and what I think was fairly nitrogen heavy partially composted stuff yesterday.

I think a hotbin might be good to have at home for everything else once I get the garden sorted.

Our co-workers have a slightly fucked compost bin that looks like a cross between a water butt and an inversion table. Would that be one of these hot compost bins do we reckon?

Regular feeding is no trouble, but wood chips and paper might be... Would shredded cardboard work?

That will be so they can turn their pile easier I guess, without manually having to fork it all into another heap.

Just get a decent 8page or more cross cut shredder from Amazon or the like. Ours takes mainly shredded cardboard.

Yeah, it's like a rotting plant matter tombola. The stand has rusted through in a few spots so we're going to sleeve it with something and get it up to the allotment I think. Already filled our pallet-cubed compost bin from clearing the plot, time to build no.2

Paper stops it all getting too damp, wood chip helps with aeration

On a compost theme, anyone made a bokashi heap or tried bokashi compost-making before?

Just found this plastic where there used to be a Polytunnel. It seems to go really deep and fold under. Reckon it may have been as a base weed suppression layer? Hope not as it'll be a lot of soil shifting to remove it.

Finally put a door in the shed. I do have the latch too but it hasn’t made its way down to the allotment yet

Our shed got busted into. Latch was torn clean off but they didn't take anything. There was a load of old tools (not as in antique) so I guess they were after shiny stuff. Bastards.

That’s the problem with sheds. They advertise there’s something in me, I might be valuable.

I’ve also got two more windows to put in. Just need to build the frames

I also need to build my good lady some flower beds.

A few weeks before we joined our site, all the sheds were broken into Only petrol or electric tools were taken, I don't bother locking my shed as a result.

Kind of, not sure I did it very well, but the food sat there for a couple of months and didn't go mouldy. Not sure I see the point now unless you have to keep your waste indoors, I've taken to just chucking the food in the same 25l tub with a grit guard, mesh and drain tap and taking it down to the allotment pile every so often. Only composting uncooked food and bread now.

I'm the same. My door is 'locked' but will pull open at any sense of a tug, so that at least if stuff wants to be pinched, I don't have to deal with a smashed shed.

I opted not to stick a lock on our shed, on the basis of the lock advertising there’s stuff worth stealing more than just a shed for putting old boots and tools in. If it was emptied it would be a massive pain but we did get all the tools free off fb marketplace

I won’t put a lock on ours just a latch. It will have plenty of windows so would be thieves can look first if there’s anything worth nicking, there won’t be.

That is so annoying. At least you’re getting this mildly exercise done early doors

Is there anything I can be planting now?

Won't be repairing (inherited the shed with the plot), just a bit depressing really. Guess it was going to happen sooner or later, very quiet spot.

Today we’ve put in a bunch of garlic, direct sown peas, some broad beans that were started out home and we’ve got a load of kale hardening off in a grow house
