in the US the rolling gravel stuff is there but there is also lots of obscenely steep stuff. especially in the actual mountains.
i feel like 1x grx was half assed because shimano doesn't really believe in 1x for gravel and have been generally stingy about having "mtb" low gears for drop bars.

Fwiw, I’m really happy with my 2x grx paired with 11-34. I’m glad I have the range it offers.

Whacking an 11-40 on my off-road wheelset next week. I reckon that should cover steep climbs with bags on the bike.

38/11 is literally 24mph at a steady 90rpm.
Maybe leave the mashing to potatoes instead?

This is just so true, forget the 1x.. I should have just set it up 2x
46/30 with 11-34 for winter #nogravel and 11-28 for summer #stillnogravelbutdry -

That’s lovely but when my ride to work is -500ft in 4 miles and I can comfortably cruise at 28-30mph with traffic on the main road with the compact x 11-42 why would I stick with the spinny 1x? We not all blessed with the pancake of London.
But beyond day to day commuting why would you limit yourself like that? Whole point of gravel bike is finding the ultimate compromise between road and off road.

Holy fuck, I had no idea ‘synchro shift’ was a thing!
So if I switch to a TRP brake set and a climbing shifter with ‘synchro shift’ enabled I never ever have to think about what front ring I am in and the system will auto compensate for the smoothest smallest steps between easiest and hardest gear! Game changer. And happy I am sticking with 2x now
BUT if I am saving money and doing just one shifter do I put it on the right or left lever?
Thoughts appreciated please -

its not as useful as its portrayed IMO

Aw don’t say that, this feels like the future of lazy gear changing
-
• #13818
its always weird that a 'system' changes the front mech gear, 2x wins besides that
-
• #13819
But then it adjusts the rear to be the smallest jump too? That must feel smooth if you close your eyes? I do that manually on my old DT shifter roadie with one hand movement and it’s amazing when it’s done correctly

Classic internet backtrack - you got me good.

i had it turned on and had to turn back off after a couple of rides, just feels weird to me, might work for you ..
-
• #13822
If you've got a history of doing that, then it might have been designed for you!
Most people turn it off. At work we set it up without, simply because we've had people come back with fucked drive train even after explaining the tech. They just mash with no give for the gear change.Anyway, a couple of reposts.

Think that’s a steel surly midnight special

This is what I have on my cross bike. I can imagine it’s decent for commuting.
