• Do they have an awful portmanteau name?

I'm not sure, it's only 1/4 JR so maybe Daschell works, or Jaschund

  • Until he sees a squirrel...

  • That was quick, good luck

  • Talking of terriers, I've always liked Patterdales and Jagdterriers, but from working lines their prey drive is insane.

  • Have wanted a dog for the longest time, conversation came up in our house the other day and my eldest kid is smitten with every dog we see. Youngest kid has only just started walking so we are thinking to wait a bit longer as we ideally would like to go with adoption. Understand we could be waiting a few years, anybody adopted a dog and have kids? At what age where they?

  • A lot of rescues specify teenage kids

My old staffy was 6 when my first was born, and the other two came in quick succession - he was brilliant with all of them, but rehoming can be stressful for a dog and might not be good to mix that with very young children.

  • Youngest kid has only just started walking so we are thinking to wait a bit longer as we ideally would like to go with adoption.

Have it adopted now so its new parents can get used to it and you can concentrate on the dog.

  • Staffys are (generally) excellent with kids.
They used to be known as nanny dogs because they are so good with young'uns

  • Ha! Rarely a day goes by I don't wish we could ditch the kids and just hang out with Odie all day instead :-D

  • Used to take the neighbours staffy out for walks when my now eldest was still in a pushchair and she loved them. They are very sweet and tbf would consider any doggo.

Thanks bro @kl I would send you an application pack but we are looking for people that aren't total bellends.

  • Daschund

    Jaschund

The spelling of the German word is "Dachshund", a bit of a difficult one to type. I like DethBeard's 'Jackshund'. The word "Dachshund" is hardly used in Germany, probably only among breeders or dog enthusiasts. Everybody else calls them "Dackel".

  • Only way to get ours anywhere nowadays is to pick him up :)

  • Well, looks like we're not getting a Dachshund any more, the girlfriend has been reading horror stories about them jumping off sofa and breaking their backs. So it looks like now it'll be a Havanese despite her specifically not wanting a long haired dog, but I'm not complaining. We've found a breeder and may be picking up a puppy in December.

  • Be careful of any puppy jumping off a sofa, and have insurance from day 1.

(I speak from experience, Murphy jumped off the sofa at 8 or 9 weeks old and broke his leg, £5000+ for the op and associated aftercare)

  • Speaking of insurance, anyone got any recommendations?

  • we have Direct Line and paid out swiftly.

There was even an error on the policy that only came to light with the claim (We got a quote before the dog and it was saved, when we got the pup we took out the policy, failing to realise we put "puppy" as a placeholder name for him, fully expected a drawn out argument, but they amended the policy without fuss and paid the vets)

  • Healthy Pets wriggled out if £1200 and gave me about £150 for our cat. I still don't know how they did it and this was after delaying for 3 months.

  • I've always liked Patterdales and Jagdterriers, but from working lines their prey drive is insane.

    No shit.

This little twatterdale has been on-lead only for the last 5 years to avoid him disappearing down fox holes.

  • Beware of the four week "free" insurance vets offer. Anything that comes up in that window counts as a pre-existing condition even if you then buy a policy with the same company.

  • We're looking at getting a lifetime plan anyway. Growing up I had a couple of labradors and despite being pedigree one had lots of health issues with his thyroid and I think diabetes as well by the end, so I'm wary of getting a plan that wouldn't cover pre-existing conditions.

  • Someone is going to grow quite big based on his/her paw size.

    What breed?

  • Saluki x Whippet mum and Greyhound dad. Probably be 20-25kg when he's grown - ears and paws are comically big at the moment. Probably end up a bit bigger than our existing hound (who doesn't seem particularly impressed so far)

  • I love cold toad in the hole. It was my lunch today, or would've been if Murphy my younger lab hadn't nicked it.

    BASTARD!!!!
