I’m assuming it’s only badly trained / socialised jack Russells that are going to be aggressive. I guess with some breeds, shit owner syndrome is more apparent than with others.

Not really experienced aggressive Jacks myself, a pal of mine had 2 and they were fine.
My MiL had a Jack x Fox terrier who was chill AF, so we had Jack crosses on our radar from the start. He doesn't bark too much, unless he sees a fox, then the genetics kick in and he wants to fuck them up.

We got lucky, he has the Border colours. but a smooth Jack coat and long legged.
We met another Border/Jack up the park, and it was the opposite, squished face, short legs, wiry coat. It goes to show you never know what they will grow up looking like.

Yeah he looks like a mates Jack cross (not sure what with), who is also a lovely little dude.
I quite like the lottery of a cross - we’re still not quite sure what Odie’s going to be like when he’s fully grown. Getting a bit more wolf-ish these days but still not obviously from whence he came!

I'm tempted with a doggy DNA test, just to see his full lineage.
I know the mum was Border Terrier, and looked full Border, but we only have their word on the Jack part, and jack's are always mixed with something else! -

My mate had a jack which apparently either bit everyone indiscriminately, or at least told them he would like to. After ignoring him for an hour then throwing his toy a couple of times he jumped onto my lap for fuss. Typical small man syndrome hiding total soppiness.
Borders I have met have been lovely little dogs, without exception.

You asked for recommendations. Beagles and their crosses love the sound of their own voices, which is a shame as they're generally good dogs but like to lead from the front. Dogs with facial creases and squashed noses can have breathing difficulties and get infected, sweaty creases.
We've got a rescue Jack cross and he's the quietest, friendliest dog I've had since a Golden Retriever in my teens. I'd wager a rescue Heinz 57 puppy would be what you need. Battersea at Windsor has always got a glut of Staffies which is what I'd get if I wanted a third dog. -

Obligatory recommendation of the Whippet as a mild mannered, cuddly but athletic medium sized dog.

I spent ages comparing breeds and came down to Border Terrier or Minature Schnauzer .
The Schnauzer has a lower prey drive so we got Otto.
Part of the comparison was how good they were with children and didn’t mind being left alone which might not be relevant to you.
10.4kg will happily walk 10 miles or have 30 mins walk. He can run 5k with me but his pace is really slow.

This made me laugh. Our Otto is just about ok up to 8mi (maybe once or twice a week) but spends the whole time running around me in laps at about 20 mph getting arsey that I'm so slow.
I'd really like to know how far he actually runs compared to me.

My mate has 4 Jacks, only one of which is yappy/bitey. But have a look and find a dog that needs you.

I'd agree with what @Constable_Savage says about Beagles, they can be feisty. My step-daughter has a Jack-cross and he's never shown an ounce of aggression or nippiness. Obviously I'd recommend a rescue like this. Mine is on the large size, 21kg and 18" at the shoulder, but most are smaller. Either way, really good in flats and want to be everyone's best friend.

Yeah I've heard Beagles can be loud, also apparently their scent tracking means they can just be hard to recall when off the lead too. I actually really like mongrels, there's something I find endearing about scruffy dogs, they're hard to find though and hard to know what they'll turn out like. I'd love a staffy or staffy cross but they're a bit too big for the flat we're in now. I saw some lab/staffy puppies and I bet they turn out lovely. I've made an agreement with the GF that if we get a chihuahua now we can get a St Bernard when we have a garden.

I've heard Chihuahua are lairy little bastards.
But as said up thread, shit owner syndrome plays a very big part. -

There's very little difference in size between a Beagle and Staffy

Chihauhaus are stupid, too much dog essence squished into not enough room. Our old childminder's one killed all her puppies and the 2 new puppies look like fucking molerats from Fallout.

Yeah still too big for us right now unfortunately. Mini Schnauzer is about just the right size I reckon I'll see if I can find and try and convince my other half to get something bigger than a rat.

Are you really sure that your small flat isn't more accomodating to a larger dog?
Its the temperament of a dog rather than their size that tends to dictate whether they are suitable for small flats. Hence why Greyhounds are recommended as good flat dogs.
A 13kg whippet doesn't take up much more room than a large cushion!

I’ve heard people say Beagles are best off in pairs or they get fed up.
I’ve got a JRT cross and from speaking to various dog trainers, they seem to think that if you get a terrier that comes from a line of working dogs (like ours) expect it to have working dog traits.
A decent breeder will be able to tell you about the bloodline’s temperament characteristics.
FWIW border terriers are lovely dogs. Not as aggro as some terriers. See also Bedlington terriers. I’ve developed a soft spot for Corgis too.
Edit: just get a whippet like Stonehedge says. Great pets.

You could be right but it's not me you need to convince, I'm having enough trouble trying to get dog that will grow to be bigger than a shoe.

I've never met a beagle owner who hasn't said that they badly underestimated how dificult they are to train and how much time was needed to do it properly.
Although having said that I only know two beagle owners and they have both failed badly on the training front. Lovely dogs but an obedience nightmare in both cases.

Will it help if I tell you that the pocket breeds tend to be very difficult to toilet train? Or so I have been told anyway...
Oh man, he is a proper cute doggo 😍
