I was hoping I might be encouraged to use rollers and save some money
I encourage you to use rollers and save some money. The gamification of training is not for your benefit, it's for the financial benefit of the people running the games.
That's not really true. I've raced on Zwift and put more effort in than I might if it was just me on a Wattbike, same as seeing a timing gate or finish line on the screen can be more useful to push toward than just counting down the seconds.
There's a benefit to a smart trainer being able to hold you to a given power so that you don't have to, just as there's a benefit to switching the erg mode off and knowing what it feels like to push that power when you're mentally a bit tired.
Concentration and motivation waxes and wanes, and gamifying certain bits of what can often be a bit of a chore is useful. It's purist nonsense to claim the only benefit is to the software developer.
I encourage you to use rollers and save some money. The gamification of training is not for your benefit, it's for the financial benefit of the people running the games.
