I was pleased Gaudu won, especially as Soler already has a stage win. But it makes me laugh how Movistar ride - they are now 5th, 6th and 8th and leading the team classification - but what did Soler's attack achieve today other than temporarily move him up the GC? He'll be the first of the top six out the back tomorrow and will lose the time he gained today. It's bonkers but in a totally predictable way.

I think that's a bit harsh - he came close to a win, they are Spain's big team at the Vuelta, might as well try and miss today when there is no hope tomorrow.

I agree with this - but I think he should have prioritised GC over the stage win seeing as he ended up missing the stage win and losing some of the time he'd gained back on the GC because of his cat and mouse shenanigans.

If you've got a stage win and are riding to improve your GC position, then do a fucking deal with the guy you are away with so he helps you gain time, instead of fannying around trying to get the stage too.

Perhaps he's not so in love with the GC, let alone the team classification, as his manager. Two stage wins is worth a lot more than 4th, 5th or 6th. One stage win is worth more than that. Well, outside the weird world of Movistar.

You trade the stage win for help in maintaining the gap you have, so Gaudu commits to a high pace knowing he'll get the stage, and Soler gets some additional time.

A decent DS would've told Soler to focus on one objective today; either the stage win or the GC.boost.
