Weird squeaky 'juddering' sensation when I ran my finger along it.

Anyone been to an Apple store recently? Do they have any Covid procedures in place that mean it’s difficult to just walk in and start touching/playing with stuff?
All this talk of iPad Air and handwriting recognition has got me wanting to try it for myself. -

went in august for a genius appointment and I got the impression you need an appointment for retail also. I wasn't allowed to browse the products freely, they want you out after the appointment.

Bought our iPad from them. No browsing aloud straight in and out . John Lewis let you lick the stuff !

I've never purchased a new iphone, always second hand. I'm considering upgrading from my current 8 to a 12 Pro, but wondering if there is any benefit to waiting a bit for any potential hardware issues that can sometimes come with a 'new' design etc. Or am I just being overly cautious?
-
• #16507
Overly cautious. Look at it as 13 years of improvement rather than a whole new thing.
-
• #16508
Yup, had a go on iPhone 12 at John Lewis the other day, zero fucks given by anyone.

Yeah I went to the regents street store a couple of weeks ago. There's 2 queues outside, one for genius bar and the other for the store. They give you a time slot to start queuing, for me it was 15 minutes later, then when you're in you have to go around with a member of staff but they've got loads of desks set with the whole product ranges. So if you want to just go and play with an iPad I'm sure it'll be fine, you'll just have to deal with someone watching you and maybe trying to sell to you.

Sounds dystopian as fuck; come look at our shiny new thing with a gentle sales droid ceaselessly, remorselessly looming over your shoulder.

When there's a genuine chance that someone could sneeze on you and you could die a few weeks later, I'll take it.
-
• #16512
Sounds better than the original experience TBF - no messing about trying to find someone who can actually sell you something.

I went to the Covent Garden store in mid July so things might have changed but after I dropped off my machine for repair, they let me roam freely to touch stuff. Every table has a giant pack of alcohol wipes and bottle of hand sanitiser. A member of staff did approach me to see if I needed anything but he didn’t bothered about the fact I said I was just looking.
Nobody was keeping an eye on me.
But yeah, there was 2 queues, 1 for appointments and 1 for shoppers. When I went back on a sat to pick up my machine, there was a queue of people waiting to go in but I got fast tracked coz I had an appointment...

• #16514
Oh and you MUST use their hand sanitiser... I said I prefer my own and I took out some clean disposable gloves to put on, they weren’t having it.

Sounds so off putting.

keenly priced... you can get a 64GB 11 from a shop with a warranty for that sort of £s...

Was gonna say that seems expensive

Trying to set up my sons iPad so he can use his own prepaid card rather than mine but looks like it won't accept a different payment source through family sharing only my card. Anyone know a way around, seems a bit dumb...
-
• #16520
Is that Apple Pay?
-
• #16521
Yes, I wanted for him to manage his own money so got a Rooster card assuming he could buy what he wanted from his allowance and it might possibly encourage some saving. However having checked with Apple seems you can't set up a card in family sharing without it being the sole payment method for everyone in the family. Unless I'm misunderstanding the only way for him to use his own payment method would be to take the iPad off family sharing but then I have no control over what he's up and he's only 10 so it's a bit crap really...
-

I’m not an expert on this at all - really very far from that but we have family sharing. This gives us additional storage for a monthly fee. My wife, my daughter and I all have separate cards on the devices. There was no issue adding cards etc. So as much as I can say is that it appears possible. Maybe someone else could take you through the process
-
• #16523
Ok weird, the new iPad won't let me add a card and the person on Apple chat yesterday told me it categorically that it wasn't possible to have multiple payment methods via family sharing...
-

Odd. I have my card on my phone. Wife is in kitchen - her card on her phone. Daughter is upstairs - her card on her phone. I am the main account holder but they use their cards independently. And we are all different banks.

Just rejoined iPhone fold from Pixel 4 with a 12 Pro.
Stand out things so far;
Good
Haven't needed to charge battery before bed - Pixel was running out at 8pm with light usage.
Square edges = easy to hold!
Some apps have better implementations on iOS
Wide, wider and widest camera is wonderful.Meh
Migrating between Android <> Apple is less difficult than it was, but still stupid challenges such as Whatsapp conversations.Bad
Still frustrated I can't have a clean homepage with 8/10 icons placed where I want them rather than fixed at the top and out of reach.
Can't set defaults for all i.e Google Photos.
1 BEG TO DIFFER
edit: oh damn, foiled. fuck you, kitchen.
edit 2: DOUBLE foiled. I can't keep track.
