Telling if the internal angle is 45 or 36 was much less easy than it sounds but using a bodgy method I think I figured it.

Cut a square of paper down the diagonal is the easiest - Tester on here approved method!

For the internal, just take the square corner and see if it'll touch the opposing sides.

For the external, put it in a square inner corner and see if the contact points of the taper hit the measuring device the same distance from the apex. For 36 degrees, one distance will be about 3/4 of the other.
