    • * MTB warning * *
My new bars do not fit in my new stem.
      Its very odd.
Bars are Renthal carbon fatbars 31.8mm/ 10mm rise/ 800mm width
Stem is DMR Defy 50mm length 31.8mm clamp.

The front part do not fit over the bar, and the bars are too fat at the rise to slide in with the face plate in-situ.

Measuring the bars, they are definitely 31.8, and I cannot imagine DMR make the stem in too small a size.
    What am i doing wrong?

  • With the face plates off, bolts out and the bars against the stem, can you slide the two faceplates along the front of the bar from the grips, towards the stem? Then pop the bolts in and tighten.

  • sadly not, the face plates cannot pass the bend in the bars, they are much fatter there.
no point on the clamping area is narrow enough to get over the bars.

I have a couple of other stems in the parts bin, I'll see if it is the wrap around nature of the Defy that is causing my issues.

UPDATE: Upsidedown had it right. I took the face plates off, slid them along and had to twist/ slide and they went round the rise/ bend.

  • on the black one, the top and bottom dont match. The bottom should be flipped over so the length of the shears/tears match up.

so the new silver one is correct, as thats how you black one was too.

  • Winter bike is up and running, really does ride great and will get a better paint job come spring!

Got some drops to put on when I can be bothered.

If anyone has any steel cx forks for swap/sales pls hola.

  • Almost finished my girlfriends new Omnium commuter. Pretty happy with how it turned out. I still need to do a few things, shorten hoses, cut steerer and convert it to tubeless. Hopefully it will be finished next week.

  • Looks amazing already. That 7800 chainset with a black chairing is a particularly nice touch.

  • Thanks. I was planning on using a 9100 crank but ended up thinking this looked a bit more in keeping with the vibe of the bike.

  • Tubeless and axs for commuting??!

    Edit: atleast level your rack

  • I'm waiting for an adapter. At the moment the seat stays impede the rack arms.

  • This looks great! Any more pics/details?

  • Best way to remove all the decals/lacquer on a Kinesis titanium frame?

The frame is old and the decals look cracked. Want to go for the raw brushed Ti look for the OH's new winter bike.

  • Picked up this Colnago Dream Cross (2004 or about) for winter use. Planning replacing shimano parts with Campa. Sellers photo.

  • Written off my GT beater frame set.. took a bit of a front end impact. Thought it’d just damaged the fork (snapped canti stud) but on closer inspection the forks are bent back, and their is crimping in the top and down tubes by the headtube.

Found discarded 5 years ago in camberwell, rip ;-(

  • got a new project on the go - will be a modern groupset on a classic frame build. talk to me about black 1" quill stems. what should I go for? nitto dynamic looks good. also black 26.0 bars with a shallow drop that come in 380/400: nitto m106, soma highway 1, or a.n. other?

  • Noooo, always loved this build!

  • Might be dependent on how new it is, all my older Nittos bolt like that one.

  • I've laced up some new wheels for this Stelvio. RVS butted spokes, Campagnolo Atlanta 96 rims on silver 32H Daytona hubs with classic style skewers.

  • replacing chainrings on ancient SRAM apex 10 speed - will the two below work? not sure what the 3mm (on the 34T) or the 4mm (on the 50T) refers to. they're both 110 and they /look/ right.

  • That's lovely! Nice 'n vibrant.

  • Working on a new road bike for my girlfriend.

It has a more or less complete Shimano 600 tricolore groupset, with a very short cage rear mech. Does anyone know if I can get away with a 30t cassette?

If not, what are the compatible options for a longer-cage Shimano 8 speed rear mech?
