  • Yeah I just got a copy for the plane, thanks.

I was right though, the two film scenes (esp. the suicide one) have more in common than the passages from the book. Probably Kubrick saw the earlier film and thought an American version of that would work better.

  • Ate up a lot of Japanese film, the samurai stuff being the gateway I guess.

  • No, but I'll give it a shot once I've time and proper internet!
    :D

  • Enjoy, it's beautiful.

  • Christmas countdown has begun.
My Sunday afternoons will be spent watching Harry Potter films until Christmas.
Today we started with Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, on 20th December we should finish on Deathly Hallows pt2.

  • Cinemas now also closed in Northern Ireland 😭

Watched Suspiria remake; Actually good, not sure about subtext if setting it in Berlin, felt that didn't quite connect. The coven / acting was great.

One fistful of dynamite: Spaghetti western set during Mexican Revolution of 1910. Epic and yeah...grim cos revolution. Cinematography is fantastic.

  • Got Rampage on. Needed some supremely low IQ entertainment for a Sunday eve. Seems to be ticking the boxes.

Is this somehow tenuously related to the SNES game where you play a big monster and smash buildings?

  • The Courier

It's on Netflix, Olga Kurylenko and Gary Oldman and possibly the worst film I've seen in the last decade.

  • Only to stare in disbelief.

It's basically a supermodel fighting twenty enormous mercenaries in a car park. Gary Oldman wears an eye patch and is therefore evil, and it features some of the worst dialogue and acting I've ever seen. Plus one of the lead baddies is one of the kids off The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe. The whole thing is shit on toast.

  • fistful of dynamite

One of my all-time favourite films, great cast, wonderful direction and a beautiful soundtrack... I'm due a rewatch...

  • The new Borat film has its moments and is up to the minute, it felt more like an extension of his America series from a couple of years ago than Borat 2. Maria Bakalova does a great job. No spoilers but - if you’ve read the news - all I can say is it has to be seen to be believed. Cringefest.

  • Tomorrow night's viewing sorted, Parasite is free on Amazon Prime.

  • Spaceballs (star wars parody): Puns, sick jokes, sight gags, slapstick, so-so acting and kept us all entertained.

It's one of those movies that knows it's stupid but everyone goes with it and it works.

My 11 year old wants to see Stalker because it inspired the videogame. That's gonna be an interesting movie night ... can't see him not getting bored, but who knows?

  • Stalker is brilliant but extremely slow. I would 100% have got bored after about 10 minutes as an 11 year old, ha ha.

  • It's all subtitled as well which was an instant no from me at that age.

  • He doesn't mind subs and thinks Russian is cool, so we'll see :D

I can't imagine him not talking half of the movie but then there are the subs to deal with that :)

  • Fair enough! I hope he enjoys it.
I've got Solaris by Tarkovsky on DVD but have yet to get round to watching it. I'm reading the book it's based on at the moment so I might give it a go once I'm finished with that.

  • The book is great too, I think the movie is more philosophical, the book grittier.

He also wants to read the book, hah, videogames as a gateway drug to literature / artsy cinema.

  • He wants to read Solaris? Or Roadside Picnic which Stalker is based on? Both are great!

  • Cadaver/Kadaver on Netflix. A Norwegian horror film which isn't out for gratuitous violence or gore. Post apocalyptic storyline done well. It's well worth a watch and has something to add to the genre.

  • ^ thanks for tip, sounds right up my strasse!

  • Roadside picnic :)

I can't get him interested in Solaris cos he doesn't like sci-fi.

But stalker is ok cos videogame and "did this movie kill it's creator????" lore 😁

  • Those that recommended Fistful of dynamite: the US dubbed or original Italian version?
