Bottom bracket tools!

Posted on
  • Need to remove a bottom bracket but don't have any of the tools needed to do this - Before I reluctantly buy any new ones, just wondering whether anyone has any knocking around that they don't need?

    Cheers!

  • For what type of bottom bracket?

  • 68 X 103mm sealed cartridge bottom bracket

  • I have a couple spare for the shimano type splined bottom brackets. Some unbranded and some nicer ones- any preference?

  • Ah, not quite sure just yet whether it's square or splined..I would assume it would be splined if the bike is post 2010, right?

  • Looking for a crank puller also..

  • Well, since you've mentioned the cartridge type of bb design (ie not an external type), I assume you'd want the splined tool, as this fits most cartridge types unless it's Campag and a few others. And I was talking about the tool for dealing with extraction/fitting the bottom bracket- you mentioned about dealing with a square design but for this it sounds like you're talking about the square taper of the bottom bracket axle, and then we're really discussing the tools for chainset removal, not bottom bracket tools. Although I'm sure I can help with this also.

  • Yeah, sorry. I had not anticipated this to be as confusing as I thought it to be! You are correct, after looking into it, it appears I'd want the splined tool.

Anything you don't mind passing on? Cheers.

  • Righto, well here's a pic of one of the tools:

Its by Cyclo which is a good older make for tools. It's actually a double ended tool, and the splined end on the bottom fits Maillard freewheels, I think. You'll need a v large spanner (headset?) or adjustable spanner to use it. And another tool I have is a more modern shimano splined one, but this requires a large socket spanner to operate it, so might not be worth it unless you have this quite unusual tool. Anyway- I'll advise of a price when you tell me which one you'd like.

  • Best thing will be to post a close-up pic of the bottom bracket showing as much of the splined bit as you can. Non-drive side is best for this because you can see most of it behind the crank arm. Also if you know what brand it is or what cranks are on it ie Shimano or Campag.

103mm I think will be a Campag one, but it’s worth checking with pics.

  • If you say where you are someone local might be able to help out?

  • Sorry for the delay - really appreciate all of the messages above, this forum is refreshing by having people who are genuine and just happy to help out..

Essentially what I'm looking to do is swap out frames. I have a fairly basic fixie frame which is a bit too big for me and I want to swap it out for a smaller and nicer looking one (will probably get one off AliExpress for now until I can find a real long-term gem), but I hadn't expected the Bottom Bracket to be such a minefield of information. Its the different terminology and standards which has made this hard.

For the frame I want to buy it just says "BSA68, English thread"
