Chain Waxing

  • TBF they don't make silly claims about the additive. It barely registers on the 1 to 10 scale of Cycling Industry Marketing BS.

  • "SILCA Super Secret Chain Lube brings all of the super speed and silent running of a hot-melt wax-dipped chain to a drip applied wax (all of the benefits, none of the hassle!). Secret Chain lube also utilizes the world's fastest, most lubricious additive, nano-scale Tungsten Di-Sulfide. NanoPlatelet WS2 has less than 1/3 the dynamic coefficient of friction of PTFE and 1/4 that of Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2)"

Lets see how it compares when an independent person does a friction facts-esque test.

  • utilizes

I think somebody trying to avoid spurious claims might have written "contains". The basic facts about WS2 are OK, I just doubt that it's utilised in a way which will gain much, if any, benefit.

  • Yeah whatevz. It's not like they said it will save you 25 seconds on a 50k TT*.

*if you ride at speed over 71km/h at 5000m altitude.

  • If you use solvent wax mixes (eg white lightning or this silca stuff) if you pop open a connecting link, are the cavities in the "bushing" filled with wax in the same way as they are if you hot dip?

    Graphene wax. $150

What I do like is the Ralph Lauren (Lifshitz) personalised polos & that when you spend this much they give you TWO poly bags!

Up to you if you read the article, but this guy is brilliant.

  • I'll take a case!

  • So CeramicSpeed is still faster up to 150k, which would be most people's TTs and cover a substantial amount of the longest road races people ride.

Mucoff Nano is interesting - starts slower, gets worse, then gets way better, then gets worse.

  • "It's gonna look dirty but rest assured it's not dirt, its what makes your chain very fast".

I know what I'm telling the next person that says my chain looks dirty.

  • I'd like to have seen a control with absolutely fuck all

  • I know the Friction Facts guy tested chains straight out of the box (DA wins) but I don't know if he did completely stripped chains.

"Of the five models tested, the Shimano CN-7901 (Dura Ace) is the most efficient chain out-of-thebox. The Dura Ace consumed an average of 7.15 watts @ 250W (97.22% efficiency). The results show the SRAM PC-1091R to be the least efficient chain out-of-the-box, consuming an average of 10.27 watts @ 250W (96.05% efficiency)."

"Removing the factory lube and re-lubing with light oil increased the overall efficiency of all 25 samples by an average of 1.55 watts @250W, when compared to the average efficiency from Part 1 of this test. The Shimano CN-7901 (Dura Ace) is the most efficient chain after re-lubing."

Actually he kind of does test stripped (used) chains:
"6 cleaned and lubed chains were ultrasonically bathed in tap water, dried, then tested.
The average efficiency of the chains after a water bath was 6.67 watts. This is an
average increase of 0.24 watts from the average efficiency prior to the water bath.
The 6 water-bathed chains were then ultrasonically cleaned in two baths of lacquer
thinner. The average efficiency of the chains after the lacquer thinner baths was 22.65
watts. This is an increase of 16.22 watts from the clean and lubed state."

    Unlubed = bad

  • I’m about to embark on my on chain waxing odyssey and was struck by a thought. Why not flush everything thoroughly and then dunk your speedplays in there? less direct exposure to road bullshit than the chain so...

  • Put the speedplays in a plastic bag first; then bin them and buy Look Keo

    😘

  • I bought this to hide dirt

    Works a treat

  • Probably because the bearings only operate in one place the wax will get squeezed out relatively more quickly and you'll have to rewax all the time? Need engineer nerd comment..

  • never buy Look Keo

    ftfy

  • I endorse this method.

  • Why not flush everything thoroughly and then dunk your speedplays

Speedplay use rolling element bearings and have seals to keep fluid lubricant separate from environmental contaminants. Both the tribological conditions and the practical lubrication opportunities are very different.

  • bin them and buy Look Keo Shimano

ftfy, and I speak as a very satisfied Keo user.

  • I keep getting spammed by absolute black chainwax on my insta. Fucking Facebook.

I clearly must buy this although I watched the video and it’s a fucking faff

  • although I watched the video

That’s where you went wrong. Enjoy the spamming!!

  • bro do u even ad block?

  • Anyone else tried applying squirt by full immersion?

I’ve been using it successfully for six months across off and on road bikes for by drip method, but the wax wasn’t staying in as long as I’d hoped so I dipped three chains recently. I’ll report back.

FYI a previously deep cleaned and then squirted chain can be taken back to bare metal quite easily with boiling water and a dash of degreaser.

  • I've not, just boring parrafin but I might give it a go. I've stopped cooking mine and gone to a wet lube Krytech thing which just pisses everywhere and doesn't last very long. It's not like the Finish Line Ceramic I used to use. Might look for Squirt once this bottle is done.

  • What do you mean by full immersion - 100% Squirt? if so, that's gotta be pretty expensive compared to the standard waxing method.
