Probably because the bearings only operate in one place the wax will get squeezed out relatively more quickly and you'll have to rewax all the time? Need engineer nerd comment..

Speedplay use rolling element bearings and have seals to keep fluid lubricant separate from environmental contaminants. Both the tribological conditions and the practical lubrication opportunities are very different.
