  • Out of interest does this give you data about average speed, distance, etc like an old-school cateye computer?

Forgot to mention I like that stuff as well.

    Otherwise good shout.

  • Sounds like you need more gps!
Which of those Garmins (if any) is best suited to my needs?

Or should I get all of the above... y'know, just to be sure? I wouldn't want to get lost now.

  • I also have an 800, had an 810 have a 1000, have one of their car Garmins and had a Vista HCx.

Edge units are best for cycling. Bigger the better for me because I tend to do lots of rerouting on-screen. Phone can be a backup normally. etrex only comes out for races.

  • OSMAND can record gpx with a plugin, for speed, distance etc.
You can then upload the gpx to places like strava etc or do your own analysis using something like training centre, Golden Cheetah etc

  • I bought a Garmin 530 purely for navigation. I don't even like to look at how many miles I have left or god forbid my speed. Screen stays on the map with TBT navigation permanently.

I like it. Got really tired of the phone and powerbank setup. Plus it looks hideous.

  • Cheers : )

When you say rerouting on-screen, does that mean you can change your destination as the day progresses? This is more or less the dream for me when I'm touring (I use paper maps like a luddite).

Btw, are you the guy that does the transcontinental race every year? I think Scherrit was telling me about you the other week. Either that or you have shares in Garmin.

  • I agree about phone and powerbank not being the most elegant solution. I guess that's really the crux of why I'd prefer a dedicated device.

Presuming with the 530 you upload the route before you leave and then just follow it TBT?
Is there much scope to change the plan halfway through the day... like randomly deciding to head somewhere completely different instead, or making a detour to check things out en route? (sorry if these are stupid questions btw!)

there is but on device routing on garmin devices is abyssmal and that is being kind.

Detours cannot be done with any ease. You just have to set a new destination, using one of the device options, such as address, map point, POI (point of interest)

  • I reckon I've a spare one somewhere

I use Komoot for routes, and you can install a Komoot 'app' on your Garmin 530 device which automatically syncs your Komoot routes when you turn on wifi. Quiet convenient.

I would expect there is, though I don't really have experience with that. Once you go off route, your Garmin will protest, and want to navigate you back to the route. You can turn this off, luckily.

  • I hate Garmin, but they're still the best thing available for my needs. Not every year, but I've done all the best ones and if Scherrit was talking about some nutter it was probably me - I'm pretty sure I out-nutter most of his clients ;)

  • What's the general feel here, Garmin 530 or Wahoo? I might be against the grain, but I had a good experience with Garmin, and that's based on a Edge Touring model

  • Garmin all day long. Most of the Garmin issues are down to user error in my experience. Worth considering the 1030 at Wiggle given it's not much more than a 530 in the current sale...

Hippy summed it up best. Maybe leave out the second part.

  • Having owned a 530 and an 830 I much preferred the touch screen, however I know the lack of touch screen and the use of buttons are a major plus for some. I found it really cumbersome to re route on the fly and the lack of touch screen limited my ability to quickly and easily pan the map.

  • Replaced my 1000 with an 830 recently and haven't missed the increased screen real estate. I didn't want the 530 as I don't want to go back to buttons for everything.

  • Is it 530 buttons only, 830 touch only? I get the point of panning the map with a touch screen, but with things like RWGPS/Komoot on your phone you can always do that on your phone quickly, save a route and sync it across, no?

  • Is it 530 buttons only, 830 touch only?

Essentially, yes. The 830 has buttons, but the UI is primarily touch-screen driven.

Indeed. The prospect of trying to plan a route on the Garmin itself doesn't strike me as attractive in any way. Quite apart from the fact that the Garmin routing varies from poor to dreadful.

  • 530 is pretty bombproof.

I do miss the touch screen sometimes. But then I remember the headache the touch screen causes when it gets wet... so i dont miss it. Panning maps on 530 is possible but slow and shitty.

And yes I can plan on rwgps on my mobile and itll get pushed over to the garmin automatically via bluetooth. So re routing or so is easy. Or just use my phone sometimes with navigation via rwgps and mounted on bars.

  • It's not so much planning a route but working out diversions due to road closures / unsuitable roads etc as and when you come across them out on a ride. I can normally work out a way round whilst still riding if I zoom out and pan around. Having to stop and check the phone was a real pain on the 530.

You should post that on Instagram sometimes ;)

  • That is a valid point, I do that quite often actually..

  • Karooooooo twooooo
