Are you talking about that red lever? That's just a isolator valve, there will be no 'resistance' when you shut it off.

That's a Vaillant Ecotec plus and it'll be the diverter valve.
They are a service item and really cheap to have replaced.
Call Mark Ray and he'll fix it for a fixed price.
