Presuming with the 530 you upload the route before you leave and then just follow it TBT?
I use Komoot for routes, and you can install a Komoot 'app' on your Garmin 530 device which automatically syncs your Komoot routes when you turn on wifi. Quiet convenient.
Is there much scope to change the plan halfway through the day... like randomly deciding to head somewhere completely different instead, or making a detour to check things out en route?
I would expect there is, though I don't really have experience with that. Once you go off route, your Garmin will protest, and want to navigate you back to the route. You can turn this off, luckily.
I agree about phone and powerbank not being the most elegant solution. I guess that's really the crux of why I'd prefer a dedicated device.
