Indirect, perhaps, as it's from a novel: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Short-Timers. Out of print, a PDF can be found easily.

Yeah I just got a copy for the plane, thanks.

I was right though, the two film scenes (esp. the suicide one) have more in common than the passages from the book. Probably Kubrick saw the earlier film and thought an American version of that would work better.
