On checking the brackets are 17cm deep, and the ply is 18mm thickness and I think 20cm depth, which is enough for most books other than oversized art formats.
I got all the ply cut at B&Q - one sheet was enough for both alcoves, and I managed to get it all done within however many free cuts they give you per sheet.

The bricks this place is built if dissolve into sand if you look at them too long. I used loooong screws on the brick bit. Metal Plasterboard fixings elsewhere. dIY thread >>>>>>>>

I thought 25mm ply would be overkill - was thinking 18 or 22, but it looks ok there. @Thrustvector are those 25mm too? My alcove is 1.3m wide, and has a very similar relationship with the shelving on the adjacent wall at the moment... I am definitely leaning towards more twin-track. I'm thinking of full width shelves and 3 tracks at 50cm spacing. I'd prefer to go with 3 'bays' rather than 2 (for looks) but it seems a bit too close together. Would be getting the ply cut and delivered - I can't saw straight.
@Fatberg - I used really hefty individual brackets to give extra support to a deep floating shelf and they've started to pull away from the wall, so I'm wary of that. Maybe I just hit a mortar joint but they are not staying in the (solid brick) wall :/
