• Looking at stuff like that, makes me realise that I don't really like modern/minimal detailing :/
It's lovely, but the shadow gap skirting makes me twitch.
I like this oak(?) lipping on the front of twin track shelving though. Been thinking about what storage to do in a wide recess next to the chimney breast, was going to just batten the walls but slightly worried about wanting to change shelf heights in future. Needs to be strong enough to hold 1.3m wide magazines and books and stuff though.

  • I've used Elfa twin-track shelving for book shelving in chimney alcoves, and ended up just using three tracks and brackets (so at ~60cm spacing). This meant I could just use 18mm ply for the shelves, and even heavy art books are fine. Once the books are on, the tracks mostly disappear anyway.

  • re: alcove shelving, not sure if it helps but after failing to find any decent solid timber shelves I liked that could be trimmed to fit for not silly money, I ended up buying a whole 25mm ply board for £80 and making these.

Sorry for crap phone pic. The brackets are probably a bit shallow for the depth of shelf but I don't intend to load them up with a lot of weight and I wanted them to match the shelves in the kitchen.
