I didn't even notice a smell.
Just went to remove the USB cable
and it took the socket and a bit of the surrounding plastic away with it.
Suggests the plastic got hot enough to melt but not enough to even singe a bit.

Sounds worrying. Think I'll pass on those.

Was it Aldi or Lidl that did the Moon Comet copies a few years ago? Those were ok, until water ingress (and being bashed and run over by mini c00ps) finally killed them.

I think it was - i've still got a rear of those that i use. it was meant to be a cheap stop-gap till i got a better light, but never got round to replacing it.

As a balance I have both front and back lights from Aldi. Not had any problems like this with either. They are both Moon copies so the front is a strip light (not the style being sold now) and the back is the Comet LED copy. The front is ok but the back is very good; bright and a long battery life.

Yeah, the rear was good. That was the one mini c00ps killed.

(as an aside, all my Aldi cheapo merino has been eaten by this year's glut of clothes moths - are these back yet?)

I re-upped on gt85 and muc off stuff yesterday. Grabbed a light set too. Seems decent enough for the money. Will report back if fiery death occurs.

Possibly the odd bottom bracket but yeah, although I wonder if it’s possible to recalibrate them down enough to be useful.

I would be cautious using car compressor for the bike tyres. There are plenty of videos on youtube where the wheel was getting damaged this way.
Personally, I don't think you need anything extra than a track pump for a tubeless set up and even thought the compressor kit can be bought for around half of that price.

Local Aldi had two "action cams" which did pique my interest but I gave them a miss as I'm assuming you can get the same online for basically the same price

Spied on an in store poster, Aldi have bike work stands and baggy MTB shorts with liner in at the mo.

Nice. I’ve been meaning to buy a work stand for about 5 years. Maybe this is the year!
Also PX have them super cheap
