Is it kind of forced and a bit cringe if you give yourself and print your nickname on your bike? Or do you get a special dispensation when you're world champ?

Nah, if you've won grand tours or you are a world or Olympic champ, you can do what you want.

e.g. Spartacus, Shark of Messina, El Pistolero

Though if Froome put Froomedog on his bike, that would clearly not be acceptable.
