Hill Climbs

  • I did 5.10 on the Bostal on Saturday, have done 5.06 depending on which of the seventy different segments you use for the climb.

Mill Hill I've got a 10.09 but whereas I'm pretty happy with my time on to Bostal I'd hope I could go a fair bit quicker on Mill Hill, tempted to go an give it a ride today for a more realistic base line.

  • Ha oh to have such luxuries!
    Mill Hill is long.
Need to be working on my excuses given how different the two are 😂

  • Should suit you better no?

Your bike should be pretty good for it. Shallow but aero wheels, decent width tyres and disc brakes. I’d be much happier smashing that up Mill Hill! It’s pretty sketchy with potholes and gravel in some parts.

  • Yeah perhaps. I still don’t really know what my ideal hill is or what I’m most suited too.
Hopefully some better weather for the warm up etc.

  • I’d say do it. Can’t see how more knowledge of the climb can be a bad thing!

  • Yeah I think it sounds like Goat's bike would be perfect for it, frustratingly my new one is an Aero roadbike (Orro Venturi) which I reckon would good fit for Mill Hill as well.

I was gonna keep things on mine as they had been, with the shallow and heavy Open Sport rims, but I've juts picked up a front wheel for my bargain-tastic winter project TT build that's 50 carbon/alloy brake track, tempted to put that on but will look proper numpty with the mega shallow rear on...

  • I did a TT on the E2/25 course riding a flouro yellow 80s track frame with a home made disc wheel. Haters gonna hate.

  • If it’ll be quicker who cares how you look.

  • That’s the hill climbing spirit!
    But please wear socks.

  • Actually brilliant excuse, I have size 13 feet, my socks probably had two litres of water in them yesterday

  • So a snapped gear cable En route to Mill Hill means didn’t get clearer idea on a target time but I spose better happened today than at the weekend

  • A useful test run if ever I’ve seen one.

  • Surely that helps wade through water?

  • Aero socks tend not to absorb so much water.
Also drillium on your shoes for drainage and profit.

  • Well based on the swearing I'm currently doing at the shifter we may well have my first fixed gear hill climb this weekend

  • Any on here signed up for the national championships? Today is the last day to sign up, and apparently they have plenty of places left, so you're pretty much guaranteed a ride.

I'm umming and aahing about entering, mainly because it's relatively expensive (£29), and there's a risk that I could be in a local lockdown on the date of the event.

This is the entry link if anyone is interested. I've recently moved out of London, so on the positive side it could be a good chance to see some of the hill climbers on here that I've met in previous years.

  • I’ll be racing. I’m sure you’ll get a refund if you have to withdraw due to lockdown.

Come and join the distanced fun!

  • I was thinking about coming along to spectate, but I understand that there are 480 places! That's going to make social distancing a bit tricky.

  • From what I understand there will be no spectators allowed on the hill. Stay at home with a cup of tea and watch the live stream 🥳

  • I admit I'm tempted but as only ever going to be making up the numbers better to wait for a more "normal" year with the crowd and everything

  • It’s also £30, which is hard to justify for me, esp given how badly I would do.

  • £30 to ride a national championship. Just being able to tell people you rode a national championship is worth £30.

I’m still telling anyone unfortunate to be on the receiving end that I finished in the top ten of a European Championship once.

  • Hillclimb national is special. Maybe not so much this year, but still special.

  • There's a live feed?

  • CTT are sending telegrams
